Pretty rare to grow up in San Diego, go to college and play college ball in San Diego, spend your entire career with San Diego, then retire and go back to your Alma mater to coach in San Diego.

His stats speak for themselves - dude rarely had more than 30 strikeouts in an entire season - compare that to today...

He hit .324 at Age 41 and hit over .300 in 19 out of 20 seasons. Remarkable consistency that will never be equaled.

I could be mistaken, but I don't believe that he was ever struck out by Glavine, Smoltz, or Maddux. Ever.

In 1986 he had his career high 701 plate appearances, and only struck out 35 times all year.

It was a shame that the Padres were so horrible that a lot of people outside of the NL West really don't know or remember how great he was.

Very sorry to hear this news. I'm a baseball fan and remember watching Tony play. My prayers are with his family and friends.

Confirmed he faced Maddux 107 times. He hit .415 and never struck out.

Still checking Glavine and Smoltz.
