Default Fast Derby 1st quarters.

I mentioned yesterday that horses who ran an opening quarter mile faster than 22.80 in the Kentucky Derby are 1-for-70 with 10 beaten favorites.

Five horses in this years Kentucky Derby ran the opening quarter in less than 23 seconds.

They are:

Bodemeister: 22.32 (2nd by 1.5 lengths)
Trinniberg: 22.34 (17th by 31.5 lengths)
Hansen: 22.59 (9th by 10+ lengths)
Daddy Long Legs: 22.61 (Did not finish the race)
Gemologist: 22.63 (16th beaten 30 lengths)

Daddy Long Legs is such an exciting turf horse -- I have no doubt he's a better turf horse than any North American based 3yo -- what Coolmore did by running him in this Derby was an absolutely criminal display of incompetence. And his jockey was riding to win -- unlike Willie Martinez on Trinniberg ... who was just trying to restrain his mount and keep him from running a 20 and change first quarter like he did the last time he raced at Churchill Downs.

Anyway, based on the official clockings, here are all the other horses who ran an opening 1/4 in Gemologist's time of 22.63 or less.

Keep in mind this is a bit crude before '91 because of the fact races were timed to the 1/5th of a second instead of the 1/100th prior to 1991.

Kauai King (22.80) ran the second fastest opening quarter of any Derby winner in history. Affirmed (22.94) is 3rd fastest. Both returned to win the Preakness.

I'll Have Another's opening quarter mile time of 23.07 is actually one of the fastest winning opening quarter times in the entire history of the race. He was placed 6th right outside of Take Charge Indy after an opening quarter in this years Derby.

Are you using the chart for timing? I only ask because Trakus had I'll Have Another going the opening quarter in 22.81.

Yes. I'm using the chart. The same times Formulator uses.

Trakus times typically differ from the offical timer ... however, the difference is virtually always consistent from distance-to-distance within a margin of era no more than about 0.06 seconds tops.

It makes a great back-check for the official timer once you study the differences by distance.

The next question is: What is the collective record of these sub .23 horses in the Preakness?

Congaree really did run a huge race back in the 2001 Derby.

This one might help a little to answer that.
