Default 52 horses going to slaughter I guess (UPDATE: Rescued!)

My old next door neighbor - full sister of the guy who won $1 million on a scratch off lotto ticket - posted this on facebook a few minutes ago ....

52 thoroughbred horses need homes. Will go to Sugarcreek this Saturday for slaughter. Gentleman died and his son wants nothing to do with them. Most broodmares are broke and some are in foal weanling, yearlings, 2 yrs and 3 yrs old.. most are gelded. FREE and papered. Friend of the deceased is trying to find homes 440-463-4288 Barnesville, OH. Please copy and paste this on your status
Thought I'd share ...

Also ... do you think any of these horses might be worth a little something and the guy doesn't know it?

Well I was happy to hear the broodmares are broke.

I pasted it in my FB status. If there's a way to donate to a rescue or rescues trying to help, let us know. So frustrating that I can't take one right now. I bet you're right, too. There's probably some nice horses in there. If only that guy could be persuaded to keep them long enough to evaluate their worth. There's probably a way to maximize what he gets out of them (Obviously appealing to his humanity gets us nowhere or he wouldn't just be so cavalier with living things). You'd think his greed would kick in, maybe overtake his pathetic sense of efficiency while disposing of parts of his father's estate. Sounds like he's willing to take nothing, just to get rid of them. They're going to the auction, right? Not straight to the kill pen unless those buyers win the bid? I hope they can get adopted out before they go to sale, but donating money to buy others might be necessary.

A commentor on ReRun's facebook page is reporting that "they were all adopted." No details offered. I hope it's true.

This post is all over the internet and FB the last 2 days.

A friend of mine called the # and she was told that they were all adopted. I hope so. The whole thing seems more than a little suspicious to me. For one thing, the Sugarcreek auctions are on Friday, not Sat. I also doubt that one elderly man with 52 horses would have broodmares that are broke. Not impossible, just very unlikely. Even more unlikely is that 52 thoroughbreds in BFE, Ohio all found homes in the middle of winter. Actually in the middle of a freaking blizzard. So who knows what the real story is, but they are no longer available. I just wish my friends would quit posting this to my FB page!!

Exactly, within 12 hrs of posting it in my status, someone up near DC told me that they'd heard all the horses have been adopted. I assumed it must've been farther along than we thought, but now it seems weird. I really hope they have been and that it doesn't involve anything shady. So strange that everything resolves itself like that in the middle of winter. I've seen situations where a rescue organization is going all out to raise the money to buy 3 horses from a kill pen, and it takes days. How on earth do 52 get placed that quickly?

Phfew. Sounds okay according to that. I'd love to know more about the horses involved. Maybe an update later. It's probably unlikely, but maybe someone will volunteer something about how they're doing.
