Default Kantharos injured, retired

Kantharos injured, retired

KANTHAROS (Lion Heart), the early season leader among juvenile colts on the East Coast following daylight wins in the Saratoga Special S. (G2) and Bashford Manor S. (G3), has been retired after suffering a career-ending injury while galloping out during a workout at Saratoga on Monday.

A press release sent out by owner Stonestreet Stables described the injury as a fracture, but no specific details were provided.

"This horse is a magnificent athlete," Stonestreet owner Jess Jackson said. "We are stunned, shocked and terribly saddened by this awful event. At the same time we are hoping that this injury will heal completely. At this point, his prognosis for a healthy recovery is good, but in any case, his racing career is over."

No, the game needs less racing and a lower takeout....He's not dead. He'll have a great career producing other horses that are injury prone. Shhh.

Very disappointing news. I thought he was special and was looking forward to seeing him versus Wine Police.

Well that sucks.

I only wish this sort of thing was more surprising than it is.

He had the outright sessions fastest unblinkered quarter mile work at OBS March....

And three very easy breezy big wins over very modest competiton. Some career that was.

What the game needs is an all-turf sprint day at Saratoga followed by Lilith Fair in the infield with Linda Rice as the MC.

One race must be restricted to gray fillies.

Although I hate to see young horses retired before they're able to mature and develop, this horse didn't strike me as being next year's Kentucky Derby winner.
That being said, there's still some promising 2-year olds to watch on the east coast and many more to come, I'm sure.

Who cares?
Some people actually just enjoy 2yo racing on its own merit. Watching quality 2yo runners race is a lot more fun, in my opinion, than hopelessly trying to figure out who is going to be the best on one day eight months from now at a distance that is totally irrelevant to 2yo racing.
