Default Sq Eddie

Whats the news on him?Suppose to be training to the derby. How is he doing? Is Oneal talking? If he goes he is a wildcard. What do you do? Toss or consider? Almost imposible to anticipate any improvement with his physical maturity.

Total toss. This is a very good group, so there is no way I can back a horse with this lack of racing in the spring. I remember when Lukas trained Grand Slam up to the Belmont- I believe- and that was a waste. Square Eddie is no Grand Slam.

I think it is a brilliant move to point Square eddie to the Derby. When it looks like Dunkirk isnt going to get in they will be able to ask Magnier and co for a blank check to reconsider.

Grand Slam won the Peter Pan before running in the Belmont that year.

As far as the Square Eddie saga goes, perhaps more of a travesty than even running that one in the Derby off of works is the impending ruin of Paul Reddam's backup, Mark S The Cooler. Despite breaking his maiden like a good thing on the turf earlier this year at SA (after several attempts in stakes races on synthetic as a maiden), he has run in 3 consecutive main track Derby preps to no avail. With big money turf races like the Crown Royal, Virginia Derby, Secretariat, etc. on the horizon, one gets a good idea of how far beyond reality Reddam actually is.

What possible reason is there to think this horse could even win a maiden special weight on the dirt?
