![]() I've only looked at the 2 Santa Anita races so far, but just to give you an idea of what we're up against:
The Santa Anita 5th is a 6F sprint with 6 of the 9 horses entered getting a rider switch. The Santa Anita 6th is a statebred optional claimer going 6-1/2F on the downhill turf course. Of the 14 entered, none have ever won at this course/distance, with only 3 having experience going down the hill. |

![]() I'm going to spend my Saturday afternoon at Aqueduct and the Magna 5 starts a few minutes after the Big A's finale.
Unless I change my mind in the next 18 and a half hours I'm going to make this play: Leg A: There looks like there is a lot of speed which should set it up for a horse from off the pace. The two I prefer most are 8 Huge and 9 Strut The Canary 8,9 Leg B: 1 Starry Pursuit's only blemish from 6 races in a two turn route on turf when she had an outside post. She's coming off a long layoff and is back to a sprint. The works look solid. I'd love her if she did not draw the rail but as long as Albarado lets her run her race I think she'll run well. Foxy Danseur is my other choice. Her off the pace running style suits this race. 1,3 Leg C: I'm taking a stand here and will single Admirality. He showed some ability last year and went to the sidelines after chasing Mint Lane at Belmont. His return race was solid and I don't think sprinting 6 is his game yet he ran well. Now he stretches out to a flat mile and I believe he is well suited to run big here. The others in here do not impress me so 7 Admirality is my single 7 Leg D: I'm not a Golden Gates player so I'm hoping to get by this leg still intact. I'm putting 3 Flighty Girl, 4 Grey Lassie, and 10 Storm Queen. 3,4,10 Leg E: I like Hannah's Classy Boy because I think he will be lone speed. I love the sire. I think he is going to wire this field. I was listening to Steve's show this evening and Brad Free mentioned Deputy Flyer did not take to the track in his last race. His debut was perfect for a closing grass sprinter so I'm hoping he runs back to that race. After looking at this race closer I can't leave No Sweat off at big odds. Unusual Heat is an A+ grass sire and this gelding might be better sprinting on grass 1,4,8 If I'm correct this looks like a solid ticket. I might add a horse or two to this ticket after a final lookover of the races and some input from my handicapping friends. Good Luck in your plays. Last edited by pick4 : 03-07-2009 at 12:27 AM. |

As far as the Magna goes, I'm using the McLaughlin maiden in the first leg. She's light on experience, but could run a big one. I'll also use the 9, Strut the Canary and my longshot play is the 5, Haley's Lilipop, as her running style seems to fit the track and distance. I'm considering singling Foxy Danseur in the 2nd leg, as the pace scenerio should be perfect for her. At GP, I'll probably use Dream Maestro and Admirality, but I will definitley include the 5 Song Shan. Lynch is too good in spots like this and he and Castellano are unconscious this meet. GG I may end up making the 10, Storm Queen, a very iffy single, only because I'm keeping the ticket small this week. In the final leg, it's virtually anyone's race, including either of the Also Eligible's if they draw in. Outside of the 1 horse, who looks obvious, I will probably take both Sadler horses with Gomez and Bejarano aboard and cross my fingers. I can make a case for virtually everyone in the race, so it's pointless to go any deeper knowing how difficult the first 4 legs are. |

![]() In the late Big A pick 4, I think Tour of The Cat looks pretty solid as a single.
The 7th looks spread. The 8th looks like a spread with a suspect m/l favorite in Lucky Island. If the LI of spring 08 shows up he wins. However while he raced against better in the last half of 08, this horses workout pattern is not typical of McLaughlin. I'm taking a stand against the NY breds and will play Imperial Council and I Want My Revenge. As far as the Magna 5 every sequence is difficult. I have some pretty strong opinions and the only outside input I've heard is in Leg E. You need a strong opinion as a single and if your correct it allows you to spread in a race that you are unsure of. I think I have all the winners but I'm going to look over Leg E in the morning when I have a fresh perspective and if I find another horse I overlooked so far I'll add it. Good Luck with your play. |

![]() I know it's unlikely, but any chance this carries over?
That was a really ,really tough sequence to hit. UPDATE: Magna 5 website is showing a 4 of 5 payout...looks possible. |
