R.I.P. to a gallant mare, can't believe any horse that ran as well as she did in the'88 BC Distaff could get beat.

I remember working out at Santa Anita when she was running.. What a great looking mare she was!! Had a huge rear end almost like a quarter horse.. Too bad she never produced anything like her. From what I remember hearing was she only had one or two babies but I could be mistaken.

Rest in Peace pretty girl.

I think she had at least 6 or 7 foals. A number of them were winners too, but I don't think she ever produced a stakes winner.
She wasn't great for a prolonged period, but man in the spring of her 3yo year - during that SA Oaks, SA Derby, KY Derby time - she was sure a good one.
She was fun to watch, and I'm sure she will be missed.

RIP... Winning Colors was magnificent at her peak. I wish more trainers had confidence in their distaff side of stable. However, North American purse structure still encourages separation of the sexes.

Winning Colors. god rest her soul. What a great Race mare. I loved her so much. I knowe Gary Stevens also thought highly of her. The epic battle between her and Personal Ensign will never be forgotten. Gene Klein lives on in our memories too.....

Thank you for the articles. I was very sad to read this in the paper this morning.

RIP girl. You will always be one of my faves! Whip all those boys butts up there in heaven.

At the races replayed a call of the 88 distaff last week. I went home and played her races on youtube that night. Winning Colors will always be special to me because she won the first derby I attended.

RIP
