![]() getting hay right now in KY is a real problem and what is available isn't that great quality and costs a lot....the farm where my horses are boarded is charging and extra $50 per head per month to offset the increase in hay price....most people just can't afford it. I've seen some pretty poor looking animals in backyard farms.

![]() some do freddy. not all owners are in it for love of horses, or have loads of money-not all owners are sheiks.
everything is going up, since so many switched to growing corn-and there is corn piled by the mile under tarps around here, as there wasn't enough storage space. overloaded with corn these days. my neighbor got into selling hay, it's turned into quite a business. but much like anything else, you have to be careful who you buy from, as some hay isn't near the quality you want.

![]() Look I completely understand that the price has doubled but annual expense is 1000 more per animal. The costs even for pet can be double that figure. How a race horse owner can be involved with a horse that he or she is not feeding correctly is mind boggling. I can't imagine someone saying " dont buy hay and feed it to the horse because the price is 25 instead of 12"
Danzig maybe Pletchers hay is 27 a bale and that is why his stock wins so much? lol |

Freddy.....I never thought of you as an animal petter. Shocking. Are you sure you weren't trying something else besides petting when the animal "let you know" ? |

my horses are ex-racehorses....as in pets. and chuck is right, the ones that are suffering from the high cost of hay are not thoroughbreds. but make no mistake, horses are paying the price.

![]() The unintended consequences of our actions are mind boggling. Sacrificing hay for corn to feed cars, not horses. The world staggers along in the wake of human error.

it's just that not every owner really cares. which makes me wonder why they're an owner to begin with. how often do you pick up a paper, or read online about horses who are neglected/starving and had to be rescued. there's no excuse for it, but sadly it happens. and fairly often it happens to horses who are owned by people who can afford to feed them, and just don't bother.

![]() just read the other day the biodiesel emits far more greenhouse gases than fossil fuels.
and the price of gas won't go down, as oil companies won't invest their capital into new refineries and the like, since they are the 'bad guys' these days, and don't know what their own future holds. what a mess.
