Paterno stays on because he does not want the all time wins to go to a guy who picks up criminals off the streets. He basically said as much when he bashed Switzer, Jackie Sherrill, and Bowden years ago. So part ego, part Paterno thinks he is playing the good guy. And he does graduate players.
