Default Thanks for the memories, Detroit

A tragic week for National Hunt racing.

Detroit City was killed in a fall at Ascot today. A horse who had all the ability in the world.

He gave me one of my best memories in racing when he won the Triumph Hurdle in 2006.

Rest In Peace, Grey boy.

Detroit City death
spoils Ascot action

by PA Sports staff
.

DETROIT CITY became the second high-profile fatality within a week when the Philip Hobbs-trained grey tragically suffered a bad fall at Ascot.

Owned by Terry Warner, the five-year-old was bidding to redeem a tarnished reputation after disappointing in the Champion Hurdle and at Aintree at the end of last season.

Detroit City had previously won eight straight races, including the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle and Boylesports International, as well as the Cesarewitch on the Flat.
Partnered by Richard Johnson, he made a slight error at the first flight of hurdles before taking a crashing fall at the second.

Detroit City's untimely end meant racegoers endured another bad loss for the second consecutive weekend after Granit Jack died in the Paddy Power Gold Cup seven days ago.

From Sporting life.....

PROUD WARNER REMEMBERS CITY

By Keith Hamer, PA Sport

Terry Warner has paid tribute to his "little star" Detroit City, who died at Ascot.

The five-year-old grey suffered a ruptured valve on the right side of his heart while jumping the second flight in the Coral Ascot Hurdle on Saturday.

"For the two years we had him he'd been a wonderful horse to win eight races in succession, it was tremendous really. He won over £400,000 in prize money - he's been a little star," said Warner.

Those eight victories included the 2006 Triumph Hurdle, the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle, the boylesports.com Hurdle and the Cesarewitch on the Flat.

However, he disappointed in his last two races last jumps season and was treated for several ailments including stomach ulcers, a wind problem and back trouble.

Warner went on: "It's very sad. He was a nice horse and being grey, he gave us so much publicity.

"I had him at home for the last two summers and he was a Christian of a horse.

"In the field you could put your arm around him. He was not a vicious horse, he was very quiet really."

Warner considers himself fortunate to have had two public favourites grace his colours in Detroit City and Rooster Booster, the 2003 Champion Hurdle winner who died on the gallops in December 2005.

"I've just been considering how lucky I've been to own two such lovely greys in him and Rooster Booster," Warner continued.

"People do love greys. The public take these horses to their heart which is lovely.

"There have been others like Desert Orchid and One Man over the years and they've all been stars."

Warner explained what went wrong.

"It was his heart. We had a post-mortem done and it was a valve on the right-hand side of his heart that failed," he said.

"He actually died in the air. He didn't fall, he jumped the hurdle.

"Richard (Johnson) rang me and said he jumped the hurdle fine and all of a sudden his backend went and down he went.

"He said that he rolled over and when he got back to him to take off the blinkers he was dead. The vet confirmed that the horse was dead before he got there.

"It was very quick so he wouldn't have suffered and he wouldn't have known anything about it."

Warner bought Detroit City out of Jeremy Noseda's Newmarket yard in a private deal in July 2005.

Very sad, but thank you so much for posting it.

He was a little star, a little star who literally tried his heart out.

very sad way to end for detroit. I liked him alot despite not convinced he was the best 2m hurdler around last year... The highs and lows of the game were shown so much in that race. Hardy Eustace is the quintessential National Hunt horse, with a limitless amount of guts and determination..it was so good to watch, but then again you just knew something bad happened to Detroit..

I didn't think he'd be much good over two miles last year and i didn't expect much more from him in the Champion, but there is no doubting he was a star.

I think he could have won the World hurdle next year.

Such a trier.

he could well have done.. i remember backing him at 8-1 on his 2nd start over hurdles.. won very well.. i was then very much hesitating backing him at 3s in the Triumph but knew he was a horse that would relish the uphill finish..

I absolutely love the return of National Hunt racing and weve had some cracking races so far (yesterday being the prime example!) but its always hard when these casualties occur. I always forget the depths of despair you can get to until it happens..

I got very lucky through his career. I remember my parents coming to visit me at uni for the last minute on the day he made his hurdles debut at Warwick (which was a few miles from uni) and i had planned on going and spending my student loan on him. Luckily, not only did i fail to make the track, but i also lost track of time and never made it to the bookies in time. Money well saved.

However, i backed him in all of his starts after then that year, which huge rewards. I had a large bet at 9/2 on track at the Triumph and i had backed him ante post.

I remember the triumph day well, bitterly cold (were you there?) and it began to snow as the runners left the paddock. From the moment they were off i was screaming the horse home. He was one of the first off the bridle. I screamed myself silly and when trying to speak after the race, i couldn't.

The only horse i have lost my voice over.
