Default Is Great Hunter a toss?

I liked Great Hunter going into the derby. Now that he is coming out of the 20 hole, is he a toss? He is one of those horses that I think has some tactical speed. I do not see him trying to clear the field. So does that mean he will be stuck going 7 wide around the turn? What do you think he will do? and does he have a legitimate shot to hit the board? I personally think he became a toss. Just looking for everyone elses thoughts.

I think you are right. Curlin and Great Hunter, are victims of the draw, and neither are good enough to overcome it.

I have to agree with everyone. His only hope is that he gets lucky and finds an opening down the frontstretch to where he can glide over. That wont happen so I think he is a toss.

I love Great Hunter here, there is plenty of time to get over to the 4-5 path before the first turn. Id much rather be out there than anywhere near the rail.

With his style I don't think the 20-hole is a death sentence necessarily. . . I'll still use him underneath. . .

I agree. I think he has to be at least considered to fill out the bottom of exotics.

Because of the post I think he'll go off near 25 or 30-1... he's worth the play for sure.

Will "light" up the board either second or third...his win prospects dimmed with the post 20 draw.

I'm kinda confused here: how did he look so good? If Gomez splits horses rather than waiting for GH to pass and then swinging SAM P out, then GH really gets extended to win the race. THis is SAM P, 5th or 6th stock in the Pletcher barn.

I also particularly liked how HE QUIT when bothered in the stretch run of the BLuegrass while SS didn't.

I agree completely, total "win" toss, but can't leave off the exotics tickets for a piece.

I think the horse is sitting on a big race. He was obviously undertrained for the last and surely got a lot out of that one. If he breaks sharp and can get over behind the early pressers, maybe sitting 6th or 7th he will have a shot. If he is 4 or 5 wide in the 1st turn he is cooked.

I will not use him but no horse is a toss this year!

I believe this horse is quite talented. In fact, I had the thinking back in February that if there was a horse to win the triple crown this year it could be him.... His Futurity win last year was a very professional race for a two year old. His debut this year in the Lewis was as easy as they come, yet against what type of field. Sam P ran even with him late if not inching back at him when they leveled off the last 1/16th. I think O'neil had thoughts of saving this horse for not just for the derby, but for the triple crown.... Keeneland race was obviously not his best, you could tell after a 1/2 mile he wasn't going to win the Bluegrass, I just wish he was a bit more game. His checking late cost him nothing, he was beaten at that point... For those thinking of tossing him out, his trip will not be as horrid as you all think. All the pace is jammed up the middle and they need to find room to run early, not this guy. He can break comfortably and choose a spot to slide into. His POST will not cost him this race, a better horse will.

Good Luck. I was not impressed with the horses out west this year. Saw them all up close and Oneil is firing a shot gun hoping to get close. Anit going to happen.
