On October 6, 1945 , William “Billy Goat” Sianis, a Greek immigrant who owned a nearby tavern, came to Wrigley Field with two box seat tickets for the fourth game of the 1945 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers. One ticket was for himself and the other was for his pet goat Murphy. A squad of ushers at the stadium failed to keep Billy Goat Sianis and his pet billy goat out of the ball park. Once inside the stadium, Billy Goat Sianis took the goat onto the playing field, causing an uproar from the crowd before ushers intervened to end the stunt.
After a heated argument, Billy Goat Sianis and the animal were allowed to occupy the box seat for which he had tickets. Billy Goat Sianis and his goat were ejected from the stadium, however, prior to the end of the game at the command of Cubs’ owner Philip Knight Wrigley, reportedly because of the animal’s objectionable odor. Sianis was outraged by the ejection, and in response, he placed a curse upon the Chicago Cubs that they would never another pennant of play in a World Series. The Chicago Cubs eventually lost the 1945 World Series when they were soundly beaten in game seven. After the loss, Billy Goat Sianis sent a telegram to Wrigley that read, “Who Smells Now?” With the passage of time and repetitive losing seasons, the Curse of the Billy Goat gradually became an urban legend in Chicago . The late-season collapse of the 1969 Chicago Cubs, and the postseason collapses of the 1984, 1989, and 2003 Chicago Cubs continue to torment fans. Each time the Chicago Cubs fail to reach the World Series, the hex is blamed. No other team in baseball history has gone longer without winning a championship or pennant.

Still a big fan.....
I've been a long suffering Cubs fan for close to 25 years. From the scrappy teams with Ryne Sandberg and Leon Bull Durham, Bobby Denier & Keith Morland fro cryin out loud! The the Hawk Andre Dawson, had some great years, then Sammy Sosa was the toast of the town for years. I've survived the horrible trades, such as Lee Smith going to Boston for (Lord Help me) Al Nipper & Calvin Shiraldi for cryin out loud! I also survived the Wild Thing Mitch Williams era, i can't count high enough the number of times that guy would walk the bases loaded, and then strike out the side, talk about heart failure! I wanted it so bad a few years ago, the infamous Bartman Ball game, we were so freakin close i could taste the world series, just taste bitter defeat once again! The Prior thing doesn't suprise me one bit, anyone that saw him attempt to pitch in spring training could tell he was favoring somethin in that arm. I thought this kid 3 years ago along with Kerry Wood, would be a dynamic duo for years. However, in my opinion Prior was burnt out arm wise from the first season, i think he threw way to many innings too soon, and now he may be burnt toast!
As far as this season goes, we've spent a ton of coin, and the starting pitching has been brilliant at times early. The bullpen has been good in spurts, and horrible for the most part! The bats have been ice cold, i'm hoping as the weather warms up the bats will as well. Curse or no curse, i remain a stedfast Cubs fan, i believe this team will hit at some point, and score alot of runs. What i hope is that will happen, before we are too far out of things to make a run later in the season!

Eh! They weren't that good in 89 anyways
They were the best team in 84. 2003 they had a roll going, then that ended 5 outs away from the WS.

Seriously? You may have to wait till Mrs O'Leary's cow comes home before the Cubs win a world series. My Mom and Sister are huge Cubs fans. They will NEVER turn it around untill they get new ownership and mgmt. PERIOD.

Went to the Cubs game last night and sat in left field roof top seats for a corporate affair...great view...lots of beer...unbelievable women...weather sucked...Cubs LOSE

Man, I grew up watching those guys play! That was right about the time we first got cable TV. I remember comming home from school toward the end of the school year and my pops watching the afternoon Cubs games (before they got lights). I collected all the cards! I remember buying a Leon Durham rookie card from a store my freshman year from a collectable store by my Highschool for a buck! I think I may have lost money on that one, LOL. I did dig the Cubbies back then. The deer, the hawk, you forgot the penguin, Ron Cey! 1986 squad had Greg Maddox on it, DUH! One of many stars the Cubs let get away!
