Default A Final Farewell

We cannot do great things on this Earth, only small things with great love.

~ Mother Teresa

I do this thread every year and I usually don't say much but want to explain something this time around. There have been times when people have taken this list and arranged it in alphabetical order. That's fine... do what you want. The reason I don't is simple... I believe most people begin to tune out halfway though.

The list is approximate order of when we lost these horses. The only exceptions are a single horse who died last year and who I couldn't get confirmation for for 6 months and that I placed the names of a few horses who have ties to DT members at the top of the list out of respect.

Please understand I am not saying they're more important. Anyone who reads / responds on the angels thread knows that a 5k claimer gets the same respect as a champion. More is written if it's a horse someone followed... it just happens that way.

I know I've left out some names. I cannot know them all, I do not seek them out... I post news when I notice which is, sadly, often. If I've heard a particular horse is gone (as is the case with quite a few)) I don't post the name until it's confirmed so I apologize for leaving several names off.

I did try to double check the angels thread and verify stuff but if I were to try to confirm every additional horse on every other places with no link, proof, etc... I put a lot of time into this because I want to but I just can't do any more. I would be sitting here for a month doing nothing but confirming stuff and it does get depressing.

So this is as complete a job as I can do. I try my best for the simple reason that they all deserve, if nothing else, to be mentioned, thought of, remembered one last time.

I usually begin with the same quote because I think it's one of the loveliest things ever written.

... And so, in loving memory of those who have left us with holes in our hearts, a final farewell.

* * *

When he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night,
And pay no worship to the garish sun.

I went up to Saratoga 1999-2001 to watch Beautiful Pleasure run in the Personal Ensign. In 2001, a friend arranged for my daughter and I to go back to the Ward's barn to meet BP. What a personality she had. I still cherish the pictures from that day.

(oh yeah. We got to meet Monarchos too)

Really nice gesture MMSC...appreciate the time you put into this. It's sad to see so many horses I recognize on there, at the same time every one of them is recognized by someone somewhere and even more so each and every one has been a big part of a lot of different people's lives.

Thanks for doing this. Every one is special.

"And Allah took a handful of southerly wind,
blew His breath over it, and created the horse.
He said to the magnificent creature,
"I have made thee as no other.
All the treasures of the earth lie between thy eyes.
Thou shall carry my friends upon thy back.
Thy saddle shall be the seat of prayers to me.
Thou shall fly without wings,
and conquer without any sword. Oh, horse."

Thank you so much for helping us keep mindful that these precious souls have done so much for us and have done all they could do to make us proud. May we remember that this sport exists because they made it possible. Also a special thank you for the Eskimo (Aboriginal) Legend. I had not heard of that before and am truly blessed with it.

Does the thread get its feelings hurt if it's disrespected? Come on. I never really understood that. It's like when people accuse others of "hating" on a horse online, as if that horse is logging into Derbytrail and reading that someone thinks he stinks.

No one and I mean no one wants to see any of these horses (or people) hurt or pass away. But it's a very unfortunate part of our game. Ganging up on Freddy for an obvious joke doesn't diminish what MMSC was trying to do with the thread. If anything it gave it a few more hits and makes it not so serious. Freddy jokes around a lot, but he obviously cares about horses. Some just think a little mix of humor helps. Especially in a thread as maudlin as this.

Random horses for random connections is a bit to obtuse for me. I wonder if people really think their kindness comes to the aid of someone who had a horse die.

The real question to be answered is how much therapy does Pletcher need with all the horses he kills in a year, its amazing he is able to carry on each day. He must have a great shrink!

I just wrote out this very long thing and was about to click submit but am not going to bother.

This is the line I really want to comment on.

So yeah... instead of saying anything at all about that first post of yours I just want to explain.

Random horses.

That is one of the main points... for them not to be random this one time. I don't know why that's so hard to understand or why, most years, someone has to have a big problem with it.

Of course it doesn't help their owners or anyone. It's not intended to. I'd have to be a horrible person to presume to think such a thing.

I'm just trying to show respect and thanks and lay it out for people who might not realize that this horse or that horse is gone and who might choose to remember them in some small way.

I'm sorry that that always seems to be offensive to someone. I will never understand that.

* * *

Oh and those of you who get it? Thank you. It's nice to read your memories and quotes and to know that some of you understand the point here.

I'll explain it to you. I'm insulted by your post and Freddy's post. Plain and simple. I have three horses happily grazing in my pasture as I write this. The day that something happens to any one of them I'll be crushed. It would be callus to make a joke about me losing one of my horses so why is this topic any different? Some of the connections of these horses are likely on this board.

This is a thread that allows those of us that care a chance to quietly reflect back on the horses we've lost over the past year. This might seem silly to some of you but it's not to a lot of us.

ganging up on freddy? gpk said oh boy, i asked why did he bother when he knew what the thread was...that's ganging up? and i guess i just didn't see that obvious joke. i thought it was just freddy being freddy like he is with threads like these-which is why i asked him why come to this one.
