I don't recall exactly, but I believe the excuse was the development of a quarter crack, possibly a result of the trauma sustained in the Preakness followed by continued training/racing during the summer.
It's really pretty amazing the way they downplayed that quarter crack. My main trainer told me all week that he didn't think BB would hit the board. He told me that if you had a $50,000 claimer with a quarter crack like that, you would have two choices. Your first choice would be to give the horse 6 months off. If you didn't want to give the horse the time off, then the other option would be to drop the horse in for $25,000.

I wish I would have listened to him and bet against BB. I figured that since the horse worked alright the other day and since the quarter crack didn't bleed that it probably would not bother the horse. I should have listened to my trainer. He knows 1000x more than I do about injuries.

Jerry Bailey said the same thing about whips. I wish they would get rid of the whips too. They don't allow whips in the 2 furlong two-year old races out here.

I won 6 races with a horse that wouldn't eat, and wouldn't hold any weight. Off the claim he was a fish - look at him from front and he disappeared. A little Equipoise and he ate up and looked for more - and started winning.

Did we win because of steroids? YES. Did the horse turn into Arnold? NO. But he put on some healthy weight and maintained it because....... he ATE.
Lets be genuine. The medication is used for what you
said. That is part of what it is supposed to be used for.
But it is also used for other reasons because...
I thought it was also supposed to be used for Low blood
counts, for horses that had already shown some debilitation.
But some steroids are used on perfectly healthy horses.

As far as Dutrow people dont like him because humility is
something that many people admire. Dutrow has obviously
worked his butt off and been through hard times. But of
course the press is gonna pound on a guy as cocky as
he is. What the heck does one expect?

....

Rule No 1: ALWAYS listen to your trainer!!!

As painful as it might be sometimes to admit he/she knows what they are talking about, always refer to rule #1.... 8-)

Getting rid of whips is something I simply cant understand. Use softer whips? Ok. Enforce the whip abuse rules? Sure. Get rid of them? That is too drastic of a change to the sport, it just is. It will not improve business and may well hurt it. Then what?

The only way the winner was picked was by the 'quick pick' button or the all button....

Something most likely went physically wrong with BB. That really wouldn't be a surprise to like 99% of anybody who watches this sport. Rick is in the 1% who evidently thinks he is somehow immune to this. You would pretty much have to think that way to trashtalk like he does. He is a bit out of touch with reality. Reality is that horses can get beat. Some evidently think it's cute ,or colorful to ignore reality. No, it isn't. It's the same grandiose way that criminals think when they keep taking chances. They simply don't even consider getting caught. They can't. It isn't in them. They lack that. Acceptance of the idea that you might fail is very important. It means you plan for the good and the bad. It means you don't take unrealistic risks that threaten your future. If this guy doesn't get help, he will end up in a bad way. If you don't respect failure as being a very real possibility, then that little "cute" personality thing is gunna catch up with you.

That is true. I was just thinking more in terms of how much money you could make if you knew for sure that the 1-5 favorite would not hit the board.

Let's be clear - I don't advocate the misuse of steroids - but as you point out, I do believe they serve a purpose when used properly.

Pertaining to Rick - I understand the opinion some have from watching 30 second snippets on TV. I can't claim to know this guy just because he caught my fastballs in high school 30 years ago. But I can tell you this - as teenagers, when he and his brothers liked something, they were all in. If it was a baseball team, a basketball team, or a 250 lb friend that entered disco dancing contests in 1975, Rick was all in. Whatever it was, he was all in.

That's the Rick I saw the last 5 weeks - all in.......

Yep - I'll send you the emal..... you'll love it. 8-)

Given the name of the stable is Rebate Stable, you'd think I'd be asking for at least $600 per unit - but he'd already spent part of his check and was looking for someplace to put the rest..... 8-)

If he is all in, then he knows how to take the good
and the bad the media can present through snippets.
He was presented in quite a favorable light with his daughter.

But I think we all understand that when he associates with
a guy who has misrepresented himself numerous times...Mr. Stock Trader...
that Dutrow himself will be highly scrutinized.

Or heck maybe he just does not care.
