For those on Long Island, compare the quality of the NYRA feeds delivered via Cablevision over Channel 74 (NYRA Network) and Channel 402 (TVG). You will see a tremendous difference in video quality. Despite the poor quality on the NYRA Network, NYRA themselves have consistently turned a deaf ear (and blind eye) to the video quality issues.
While I have posted about this subject before, Dan Silver and his NYRA video team predecessors (including incumbent Jon Imbriale) have tossed the video distribution question around like a hot-potato not realizing that all of their internal work at NYRA goes for nothing over their own network as delivered by Cablevision. Technically, the answer is that Cablevision does not outfit Channel 74 with HD capable transmission technology. As a result, you wind up with a blurry, poorly interlaced edition of the clear track feed. The result? The HD Digital feed is actually converted BACK TO pre-HD standards for distribution over Cablevision. Why the NYRA video team does not want to "own" the end quality of their video product and get the broadcast issue sorted with Cablevision, even at their own expense, still puzzles me. Exactly the point : it is the cable company's last mile technology (meaning what channel is used to rebroadcast the signal) and whether it has HD equipment at the headend. If I were Dan Silver in charge of NYRA's video program - and specifically wanted to deliver a top flight experience into the home market - I would be working hourly with the cable providers until these last mile issues are sorted.
Again, the point is simple : NYRA and the entire crew can tout their new HD systems at their tracks, but until they are delivering that experience everywhere outside of their plants, the value to the total viewing market is hugely diminished.
