It does seem a little strange, but I was using Sandy as a reference point and what happened to the Montauge tunnel that is still being rebuilt.
NYC got 5-6" of rain the Tuesday and Wednesday before the Derby and that part of Manhattan as I remember is prone to flooding. That doesn't excuse DRF for not having a backup server for situations like this, but if they did get wires corroded by damage from the earlier rain, it's possible this created a huge power failure that caused the entire system to be corrupted.
