Default Cancer claims Dickie Small at 68

Maryland loses another special brand of horseman as Dickie Smalls passes at 68. Concern.. Broad Brush.. Valley Crossing.. many more. A Green Beret for 2 tours in Vietnam, he was as well known for launching jockey's careers as for his training record. He was widely loved and respected and like Voss before him, will be terribly missed.

That is a shame. One of my favorite horses that he trained was a sprinter mare named Broad Smile who could put in some spectacular stretch rallies.

Ouch what a shame. Dick Small was a very good horse trainer. My condolences to his family.

A very fine conditioner. Loved Broad Brush, Star Minister, and his others. Always added his horses in my wagering.

Will be missed. Condolences to family and friends...

Here is an outstanding 2009 Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred feature on Dickie Small by Vinnie Perrone: http://midatlantictb.com/cms/index.p...f-dickie-small

Hope people heard (or listen on archive) Dr. Bowman, Andrea Seefeldt and Jerry Bailey appreciation of Small Tuesday. Angel Cordero Wednesday on Broad Brush. Tony Black, who rode Broad Brush to his first two wins, Thursday too.

Broad Brush and Waquoit in the Masscap was the greatest race ever at Suffolk. The call by Jim Hannon still gives me goosebumps. RIP to a great conditioner.

This was a recent story about Dickie and his assistant Dylan who is running the barn right now. Really pulling for her to have success with it!
