There are many medical conditions that require removal of the spleen as part of definitive treatment.

He will be at risk for certain types of bacteria for the rest of his life if he wasn't vaccinated pre-op, but by itself this will not stop him from competing assuming he is okay otherwise.....

Lets hope JV makes a good recovery. JerryBailey on TV commentary said he wouldnot be out that long, but i remembered that Angel Cordero jr. retired after having his spleen out after a terrible fall. In looking it up I came across this article which detailed it all, and it was JV's horse that had broken down and Cordero horse xcrashed into it and threw him. Story below.

yikes, probably did not need to read that in lieu of reading that today.

I only met Cordero once, same time I met JV, it was at a dinner, both seemed like really good guys.

Hoping for the best.

i don't think the spleen removal is why he retired. and note docicu's comments.

You are right. Cordero had a broken leg and ribs too and was out 6 months
according to the article. JV is out for the rest of the year according to Cordero

Calvin Borel tweeted a couple times about his own experience with this:

Quote:
had my spleen removed after a spill in the 80's haven't missed it miserable luck though
And in response to someone's caution about the immune system:
Quote:
that's the main problem- immune system hasn't been able to fight off routine infections several times
