i read this morning about more things that have stopped being processed because of the shutdown, including pay to next of kin of lost military members.
i read last week about the widow of a firefighter, who has had all benefits halted since the shutdown. she gave birth right after losing her husband. she's getting by on donations, etc.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a Sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. ...Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here'. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and Grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better." Barack Obama March, 2006

I think it would be educational especially to seniors demonstrating America is out of cash and is unable to even survive month-to-month. We need a budget that resembles the money taken in. Actually we need a budget lower than what we're taking in in order to make a dent on the debt. We're spending like a crack whore with a stolen credit card. Without addressing the budget, there's no sense borrowing more money.

Obama not wanting to deal is similar to a trophy wife wanting her credit card back before she discussed any cutting back. Give them the money and neither is going to cut a thing.

We can't default so a 30-day supply of cash should be approved and revisited every 30 days until we get to a balanced budget.

you've got to be kidding. why in the hell would you want us to default? do you know what repercussions there could be, and not just here, but worldwide?

It seems that you have anointed Cash for Clunkers as Ground Zero for all that is wrong financially with this country. Get over it as it pales in comparison to the 2 unfunded wars by a wide margin. Cash for Clunkers is just another example of politicians catering to a special interest group. The program sucked for sure but the whole process of government catering to the special interests to the detriment of all of us is really the problem. Your need to place blame on one party when BOTH parties are equally culpable shows that you are locked in some fantasy world of good vs evil when the reality of the situation is that it is EVIL vs EVIL. Bloods vs Crips.

i agree, both parties need serious work. however, we all know who has led us to this current shutdown, and is now threatening economic chaos with the debt ceiling. our economy has been showing signs of moving in the right direction, and now all this.
congress knows, and knew full well what their spending would lead to. laws they've passed has brought us to this debt ceiling. had they wished to remain forever below it, they should have budgeted wisely. this isn't something that has just happened. it's been coming for some time. it's disingenuous now for anyone in congress to say 'we must reign in spending'. that horse left the barn a while ago.

I completely agree with you and think regardless of who's in power they should be forced to operate under a balanced budget unless we're attacked or citizens are dying in the streets.

The Cash for Clunkers took stupid to a whole new level IMO
