Keeneland September: Day Two hips to watch
By Joe Nevills Hip No. 266, bay colt, by Tapit—My White Corvette, by Tarr Road, consigned by Denali Stud, agent. “He’s a nice horse. He’s just a really athletic colt, and a pretty-moving colt. He just kind of floats. People have commented on how good he walks and how light on his feet he is. He’s very correct and has been a nice horse. We knew he needed time and we just held him for September.” Craig Bandoroff of Denali Stud on the full brother to champion Stardom Bound. Grade 2-placed stakes-winning Tarr Road mare My White Corvette has produced five winners from six foals to race. Bred in Kentucky by celebrity chef Bobby Flay, this colt is from the family of Peruvian champion Davidov and Grade 2-placed stakes winner Light My Fuse. Hip No. 291, bay filly, by Bernardini—Pacific Spell, by Langfuhr, consigned by Brereton C. Jones/Airdrie Stud, agent. “Obviously, that’s a very special family for us, being a half-sister to Proud Spell, who gave us the most fun we’ve ever had. This is a beautiful filly, just exactly what you would have asked for when you breed to Bernardini. She’s got a lot of class, presence, and unbelievable walk on her. We think she’s going to be a racehorse.” Bret Jones of Airdrie Stud describes the half-sister to champion Proud Spell, who won the 2008 Kentucky Oaks as a homebred for the Jones family. Pacific Spell has produced three winners from four foals to race, also including Grade 3-placed winner Proud Pearl. Bred in Kentucky by Brereton Jones, the filly’s page also includes Grade 1 winners J P’s Gusto and Imaginary Lady. Hip 340, Midnight Belle, bay filly, by Bernardini—Queenie Belle, by Bertrando, consigned by Eaton Sales, agent. “She’s somewhat typical of Bernardini in scope, where she has some length to her and looks like a two-turn filly, but also has the big hip and big shoulder on each end to provide the speed. He mother has been superb. Unrivaled Belle was a great mare and is throwing phenomenal foals, so I suspect the female end of the family will continue to grow.” Reiley McDonald of Eaton Sales on the half-sister to Unrivaled Belle, winner of the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic. Her dam, multiple Grade 2 winner Queenie Belle, has produced four winners from as many foals to race. This filly, who was bred in Florida by Vesgo Racing Stable and Seidler Racing Stable, is from the family of Group 3 winner Canon Can. Hip No. 377, gray or roan colt, by Tapit—Rhumb Line, by Mr. Greeley, consigned by Woods Edge Farm, agent. “He’s a full-brother to Zazu and Flashback. He’s a big, powerful colt, a very correct, well-made horse by one of the best stallions in America. He’s a full brother to two very good horses and he looks the part.” Woods Edge Farm’s Peter O’Callaghan describes the latest yearling from the successful cross of sire Tapit and winning Mr. Greeley mare Rhumb Line. The dam has produced four winners from five foals to race, all of them stakes winners or graded stakes placed. In addition to his notable full-siblings, this colt is a sibling to stakes winner Corinthian’s Jewel and Group 2-placed winner Art Princess. He was bred in Kentucky by SF Bloodstock. Hip No. 394, chestnut filly, by Pulpit—Ruthian, by Rahy, consigned by Stone Farm, agent. “She’s a full-sister to Rutherienne. You can’t get any better than that, and she’s a nice-looking filly, out of a young mare. She’s got great balance, a nice temperament. She’s a nice filly by a top sire, out of one of the greatest families, I believe in the book.” Arthur B. Hancock III of Stone Farm describes the filly out of stakes-winning Rahy mare Ruthian, who has produced seven winners from as many foals to race. Two full sisters have won in graded stakes – Grade 1 winner Rutherienne and Grade 3 winner Ruthenia – and half-sister Ruthville is a stakes winner. Payson Stud bred this filly in Kentucky, and her extended family includes Grade 3 winner Adcat. Hip No. 432, bay filly, by Distorted Humor—Sheba Gold, by Sadler’s Wells, consigned by Darby Dan Farm, agent. “Her mother’s a half-sister to Perfect Soul, so it’s a big family. Obviously, the quality of the filly, with the Distorted Humor plus the pedigree is huge. She’s just very balanced. She’s got a lovely walk, and just a really nice horse.” Darby Dan Farm’s Renee Logan describes this product of the Charles Fipke breeding program, out of Fipke-homebred Sheba Gold, a half-sister to Canadian champion Perfect Soul. Sheba Gold is dam of two winners from three foals to race, including stakes-placed winner Seeking Sheba. She is from the family of Grade/Group 3-placed winners Dimontina and Dance Secretary. Hip No. 438, bay filly, by Malibu Moon—Shop Again, by Wild Again, consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, agent. “She’s as good a filly as we have on the farm. She’s extraordinary in every way. She’s got pedigree, but she’s also got all the physical attributes as well.” Headley Bell of Mill Ridge sales discusses the final yearling to through the ring during the sale’s second day. Grade 1 winner Power Broker is one of three winners from as many foals to race out of stakes-winning Wild Again mare Shop Again. Bred in Kentucky by Jamm, Ltd., this filly extended family features Grade 1 winners Miss Shop and Trappe Shot and Grade 2 winner Lay Down, as well as Grade 2-placed stakes winners Bought in Dixie and Fifth Avenue.

Keeneland September: Day Three hips to watch
By Joe Nevills Hip No. 446, bay filly, by Tiznow—Silken Cat, by Storm Cat, consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for Aaron and Marie Jones. “This is a Tiznow filly, a half-sister to Speightstown. When you breed to Tiznow, this is what you’re looking to try to produce. She’s just a big, strong, powerful filly. She’s got a little bit of refinement from the mare. Just all class and very correct. Just unlimited potential. Everybody knows what Speightstown’s doing as a stallion, and that’s some powerful genetics there. She was one of the best fillies we had on the farm this year.” Mark Taylor of Taylor Made Sales Agency describes the half-sister to champion sprinter and leading sire Speightstown. She is out of Canadian champion Silken Cat, by Storm Cat. Bred in Kentucky by Aaron and Marie Jones, this filly is from the family of Grade/Group 1 winners Turk Passer and Mani Bhavan, Grade 2 winners Hear the Ghost and Star Dabbler, Grade 3 winner Pink Champagne, and Puerto Rican champion Mister Fanucci. Hip No. 496, dark bay or brown colt, by Galileo—Starlight Dreams, by Black Tie Affair, consigned by Woods Edge Farm, agent. “There won’t be too many Galileos here. He’s really a very nice colt, a beautifully made horse, beautiful mover. He looks like he’ll make a nice 2-year-old. He’s a half-brother to a promising young sire in Europe called Mastercraftsman, so he’s something to look forward to. I hope he’ll be received well.” Woods Edge Farm’s Peter O’Callaghan discusses the colt out of the winning Black Tie Affair mare Starlight Dreams, whose seven winners from as many foals to race include European champion and young sire Mastercraftsman as well as Grade 3 winner Genuine Devotion and Group 1-placed winner Famous, who brought over $1.46 million as a yearling. His page also includes Group 1 winner Pressing, Group 2 winners Celestial Storm and Thawakib, and Group 3 winners Mazuna and Beyond Desire. He was bred in Kentucky by SF Bloodstock. Hip No 515, gray or roan colt, by Tapit—Successful Outlook, by Orientate, consigned by Gainesway, agent. “Successful Outlook was a graded stakes winner at 2 in New York. This colt has a very big update in that he’s a half-brother to Sweet Lulu, who recently won the Grade 1 Test at Saratoga. He’s a very balanced, great-moving correct colt. He’s got a lot of charisma. He’s highly popular, he’s a great prospect, he’s highly sought after, and we expect him to sell very well.” Michael Hernon, director of sales at Gainesway, on the colt out of Grade 3 winner Successful Outlook. The dam’s one winner from two foals to race is Grade 1 winner Sweet Lulu, who is undefeated in four starts. The colt’s family members include Group 1-placed winner Catch a Glimpse and Group 3-placed winner Spring to Light. He was bred in Kentucky by Gainesway. Hip No. 541, bay filly, by Indian Charlie—Take Charge Lady, by Dehere, consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent. “A half to Take Charge Indy out of a great racemare, really refined, really well-made with a good frame. She’s top-class. She’s very correct, deep, really pretty, good angles, moves well, and a great side profile. She’s a really attractive filly.” John G. Sikura of Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency on the colt out of top broodmare Take Charge Lady, a multiple Grade 1 winner who has produced four winners from five foals to race. Her siblings include 2012 Florida Derby winner Take Charge Indy and recent Travers Stakes winner Will Take Charge. Hip No. 544, chestnut colt, by Malibu Moon—Tap Your Heels, by Unbridled, consigned by Dromoland Farm, agent. “He’s a lovely, smooth, balanced, good-walking horse. I like him very much. He’s got a great mind.” Gerry Dilger of Dromoland Farm talks about the half-brother to leading sire Tapit, out of stakes winner Tap Your Heels. Bred in Kentucky by Barouche Stud (Ireland) Ltd., this colt is a sibling to three winners, including multiple stakes-placed winner Overandabeauty. Hip No. 559, dark bay or brown colt, by Dynaformer—Thissongsforyou, by Unbridled’s Song, consigned by Three Chimneys Sales, agent for Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings. “Everybody knows Dynaformer and you know what to expect from him. He just has runners, and this is just as good as Dynaformer gets. He’s that good. Obviously, Stonestreet’s proven to breed a top-class racehorse, so this is a nice, nice animal.” Guinness McFadden of Three Chimneys on the colt from the final crop of prominent sire Dynaformer. His dam, Thissongsforyou, has produced one winner from one foal to race. The Stonestreet-bred colt is from the family of Grade 1 winner Magnificent Song, Grade 3 winners Lech and Savina, and Venezuelan champion The Mindfulangel. Hip No. 622, chestnut filly, by Giant’s Causeway—Wilshewed, by Carson City, consigned by Valkyre Stud, agent for Mr. and Mrs. William Currin. “That’s a half to the colt that brought $1.55 million last year. She’s just a really pretty filly. I’ve got high hopes for her. She’s a very leggy filly with a lot of scope. A lot of good size and length. The family has liked the dirt and the grass.” Valkyre Stud’s Catherine Parke discusses the three quarter-sister to Grade 1 winner Stormello and Grade 2 winner My Best Brother. Her dam, the Carson City mare Wilshewed has produced four winners from five foals to race, and a colt by Bernardini brought $1.55 million at last year’s Keeneland September sale. This filly’s family includes Group 2 winner All Bar One and Grade/Group 3 winners Reserve Your Heart and The Pamplemousse. She was bred in Kentucky by Summer Wind Farm Ltd. Partnership.

By Nicole Russo A half sister to champion and prominent sire Speightstown set the bar high early in Wednesday’s third session of the Keeneland September yearling sale, selling for $1.75 million to Torrealba Holdings to establish a new high price for the sale. The daughter of Tiznow was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, as agent for breeders Aaron and Marie Jones. “We liked her,” Goncalo Torrealba said after signing the ticket. “She comes from an outstanding pedigreed family, and that’s what we’re trying to build at Three Chimneys. … Borges Torrealba became partners with Three Chimneys, so we’re looking forward to having her at Three Chimneys after her racing career.” The filly is out of the stakes winning Storm Cat mare Silken Cat, who earned Sovereign Award honors as Canada’s champion 2-year-old filly of 1995. The mare’s only winner is Speightstown, who won four graded stakes races, including the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, in 2004 to earn the Eclipse Award as champion sprinter. He now stands at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky., which also stands the filly’s sire, Tiznow.
