Adultery is illegal in 22 of the 50 states. In Massachusetts, Idaho, Michigan, Oklahoma and Wisconsin it's a felony offense.

we have many archaic laws still on the books. i doubt anyone has been charged with that in years.
it's illegal to mispronounce the name 'arkansas' if you're in arkansas. i doubt anyone tries to enforce it tho.

And the woman in Dubai was pardoned, so same difference; she didn't end up in jail for a year for it.

Adultery is still regularly prosecuted in our military, too, isn't it?

Fact is, the woman in Dubai wasn't convicted of anything that you couldn't be convicted of here- adultery (not often enforced, but illegal in almost half of the states), making a false statement and drinking (you can arrested for public intoxication in many areas of the country, even if you aren't driving or anything like that).

I'm not disagreeing with you that it's idiotic for governments to insert themselves into the sex lives of private citizens, just that, in this case, the media spun a story in such a way that we could all shake our heads about those barbaric Arab nations jailing a woman for reporting a rape, when in fact that wasn't what happened. She rescinded the rape accusation and then was convicted for things that she confessed to and which are also illegal here in the good old US of A.

The real story, I think, is why she was pressured to rescind the claim of rape, because that's also something a lot of rape victims face here. And here they also get charged with making a false report (warning: article may raise your blood pressure):

unreal...altho one has to wonder if they just wanted to be as harsh as possible since the two were going to town in a park with kids present (clothed or unclothed).

but it's true, we do like to feel superior...some of us also think we shouldn't try to improve at all from where we're at, but should just be happy that it's better here.


as for the military, i'm not sure if/how often people are charged with adultery any more. haven't been in for some time. probably only brought up in a case like the commanding officer who faked his own death to try to end an affair. not sure if they tacked it on, but they may have just because the guy was such an idiot.


and i hate what rape victims go thru, but people crying rape when they shouldn't has made it harder on those who truly are victims.

13 arrests over a 38 year period resulting in no jail time, in a State as large as New York? I'm surprised there isn't protests in the streets.

BTW the story seems to be missing some key facts

Corona was sentenced to 12 months probation on Nov. 24 for a public lewdness conviction. That case began June 4, 2010, when she and Justin Amend, 29, of Oakfield were arrested for public lewdness, after police observed them having sex on a picnic table in Batavia’s Farrall Park.

Amend pleaded guilty to the lewdness charge in August. The case took a turn when a warrant was issued for his arrest because Amend moved to Florida and missed his November sentencing hearing.

He appeared in City Court Wednesday. City Judge Robert Balbick sentenced him to 30 days in jail.

The public lewdness case garnered extensive media coverage because Corona, who is married, was also charged with adultery. The adultery count was dropped as part of a plea bargain

and an update

Suzanne Corona was sentenced to six days in jail this week after she pleaded guilty to violating her probation.

The petit larceny charge is pending against Corona. She allegedly attempted to shoplift about $50 worth of merchandise from Stagecoach Florist in Batavia City Centre.

Bottom line is she got a year probation and he got 30 days in jail, most likely for running.

If she wasn't a thief she'd have avoided jail all-together.

Boy her kid must be proud of her!

Travel to backward countries? From what's been going on in some of our state houses lately, you really don't need a passport to venture to places where the government wants to legislate bedroom activities.

Sorry to say but yeah...the repubs are so far right they went over the edge and these new lefties aren't much better...But, you can buy as many guns a month as you want.. in VA...and we have several otb's state wide..
Our neighbor to the south NC is supposed to be even worse...according to the bit by John Oliver few nites ago..
