Is Marvin Lewis a much better coach than what he gets credit for?

Ahh, memories. I was taken to the woodshed by most on here stating that no way should marvin Lewis get fired after the 2010 season. I was absolutely brutalized by all involved. I should go back and look for that. I did go back and look. It was ugly. DaHoss and ateam are just really mean people!!! They really don't like me. I think all 3 of us are right. The Bengals have made the playoffs every year since that thread and they still have zero playoff wins!! good thing I never come on here anymore. It's for the best.

Doug, you have a grammatical pet peeve of mine in the title of this thread. The 'what' is completely unnecessary. It's something I hear buffoon color commentators like Troy Aikman say all the time: "He's playing way better than what he was last year" and it drives me nuts.

Oh, and for the eternal victim up there, his argument was never that Lewis was a good coach statistically or strategically. It was always something meaningless like "Lewis is old school, he's a nice guy, he's a straight talker", etc. and therefore he shouldn't be fired.

This is a lot of chest thumping for a team that squeaked into the playoffs the last two years. If you want a coach's ultimate achievement to be making 3 playoff games in a decade you can have him. IMO he is not a good enough coach to win a Super Bowl, therefore he should have been fired already. Congrats on making the playoffs.

All situations aren't equal. You can't hold the coach for the University of Montana to the same standard you hold Mike Krzyzewzki. You can't hold Lewis to the same standard as Belichik. Speaking of Coach K, something he once said has always stuck with me. He said to never let your success or failure be defined by someone else's expectations. The job of a coach is to use the resources at his disposal to acquire the best possible talent he can, put them in the best position to win by a combination of scheme and inspiration, set realistic expectations, and try to meet and then exceed them. My opinion is that Lewis gets as much out of his situation as anyone should reasonably expect.
