Next May-June.. Around Belmont Stakes. Bill Nack, who wrote the book used as the basis for the film, said Friday that he thinks it's going to be terrific. He is seeing the full film this week. He'll be on ATRAB with us after he sees it. Says it was like Sam Shepard WAS Frank Whitely...

Um, why make a movie about Ruffian? Why not a story that ended in a positive way? I get that Ruffian was a great filly, but wouldn't it be better for the industry to have a movie about Secretariat or Sunday Silence or something?

It is about the spirit of the horse. Tragedies often make good stories. I have read a ton about her. She was amazing. Her life is perfect for a movie. A fallen hero.

It doesn't hurt that the Janneys bred her and they have a hook into Hollywood.

Lassie was always played by a boy, too.

Though I heard the last Benji was played by one of the original Benji's daughters.

Benji? Bengy? Benjy? It's been a long time since I saw one of those movies...

Yes he was. He told that funny story when asked why he was running Nobiz Like Shobiz in the Champagne off one race. He asked Whitely after Ruffian won her maiden if he would look for an allowance for her and Whitely said something like "does she look like she needs an allowance race."

Unfortunately, Frank Whaley will never be as dashing as Nack.
