With regard to Gates, I can't imagine that he will have any problem being confirmed. He is very well respected by both parties. I believe he has worked for Presidents from both parties.
He is not well respected by both parties. He has never worked for a Democrat either. He worked for Nixon and then was Ford's Chief of Staff. He worked for Reagan too. The good Bush 41, hates him. He is a neocon who helped found the neocon school or what they call the New American Century. He is an arrogant jerk and history will place him right next to McNamara.

How much of his $100 million is he donating to the kids who lost their limbs over there fighting a ridiculous war. Maybe if he wasn't so interested in transforming the army into a high tech one where big business can make more money, he would have put the needed soldiers on the ground. He should have stopped at Afghanistan, but we all know Rumsfeld was one of those guys who wanted to invade Iraq since Bush became President.

I agree with everything here. We need some sort of change. I cannot stand when Bush says stay the course. Stay the course is not working. But I could not stand Rumsfeld arrogance and the fact he wouldnt let the military do their job.

Speaking of quotes, this one makes a lot of sense...

"There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know." -Donald Rumsfeld

Another Rumsfeld quote......

Your performance depends on your people. Select the best, train them and back them. When errors occur, give sharper guidance. If errors persist or if the fit feels wrong, help them move on. The country cannot afford amateur hour in the White House. - Donald Rumsfeld

My second paragraph was about Gates, not Rumsfeld. I was saying that Gates has worked for Presidents from both parties and is well respected by both parties.

With regard to Rumsfeld, he certainly used to be respected by both parties. I think his confirmation as Sec of Defense was unanimous in the Senate.
