![]() Curlin's Dam, Sherriff's Deputy, Dies
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Thursday, July 19, 2012 8:06 PM Posted: Thursday, July 19, 2012 12:47 PM Sherriff's Deputy, the dam of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin , has been euthanized at Issam Fares' Fares Farm near Lexington because of complications from laminitis. The daughter of Deputy Minister was 18. Curlin, by Smart Strike , was Horse of the Year in 2007 and 2008. During his first Horse of the Year season, he won the Breeders' Cup Classic − Powered by Dodge (gr. I), the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), the Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I), and two other graded stakes. He finished second in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) and third in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and also was voted champion 3-year-old male. In 2008, Curlin captured another Jockey Club Gold Cup, plus the Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I), the Woodward Stakes (gr. I), and the Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup (UAE-I). He earned an Eclipse Award as champion older male and was a champion in Dubai. Curlin, who ranks as North America's all-time leader with earnings of $10,501,800, stands at William S. Farish's Lane's End Farm near Versailles, Ky. "Sherriff's Deputy has been a dear part of the Fares Farm family for 18 years, and she's responsible for some of our fondest memories," said Shannon White, general manager at Fares. "I'd like to thank farm manager Carrie Clark and veterinarians Laurie Metcalf, Christina Lu, and Raul Bras for their diligence and care in providing for a comfortable and productive life for Sherriff's Deputy. "I have no doubt that Curlin got his grit and determination from this mare; her constitution and resolve were absolutely unparalleled," White added. Bred by Fares Farm, Sherriff's Deputy is out of grade II winner Barbarika (by Bates Motel). Sherriff's Deputy is the dam of two other winners. Her other foals include an unplaced 3-year-old full brother to Curlin named Deputy Striker and a Distorted Humor weanling filly. Sherriff's Deputy was not bred in 2012. ![]() It's a strange and very nice thing being able to remove a name from this list!
Near fatality Del Mar almost suffered its third fatality in the first three days of the meet when Appetizing, a 3-year-old filly, was vanned off after the fourth race on the turf course. Track stewards initially reported the filly suffered broken sesamoids in her right front foreleg and was euthanized. They amended the report prior to the final race of Friday's card, saying the Barry Abrams-trained filly was alive and being examined by private veterinarians. Abrams said late Friday night the filly suffered a suspensory (ligament) injury and would be able to come back in six months to race. "The filly was dead tired and (jockey Chantal Sutherland) pulled her up too quick and she took a bad step," said Abrams. "The vets took X-rays, and there are no broken sesamoids. She doesn't have to be put down." The daughter of Unusual Heat had earned $6,669 in her first two starts for owner Dyan Abrams. Del Mar had one fatality during the races on Wednesday and another during morning training hours on Thursday. http://www.nctimes.com/sports/equest...90d31a625.html |

![]() Exceller's Brother American Standard Dies
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Monday, July 23, 2012 5:57 PM Posted: Monday, July 23, 2012 5:28 PM American Standard, a 32-year-old pensioned stallion by In Reality, died July 21 because of the infirmities of old age. “He was a smart, happy, character of a horse that always looked and acted years younger than he was,” said Michael Lischin, co-owner of Dutchess Views Farm near Pine Plains, N.Y. “We are glad he was healthy and active right up until the day he died.” Bred by North Ridge Farm out of 1986 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Too Bald (by Bald Eagle), American Standard was a stakes winner and a half brother to four added-money winners, including champion 2-year-old male Capote and major international winner Exceller. American Standard gained a measure of fame during his racing career. He became the 100th stakes winner trained by Hall of Famer Laz Barrera when he won the 1984 Orange County Handicap. During his career, American Standard carved out a record of 5-7-5 from 31 starts and earned $180,120. American Standard is represented 13 stakes winners, including grade II winners American Royale and Bluesthestandard. His progeny earnings are more than $10.9 million.
