Nice piece in the Wall Street Journal today about Spitzer. It was telling a story about how he said that he would not allow any out of state indian tribes try to horn in the NY market. Then it went on to detail how his biggest campaign contributor is a developer (also aligned with Excelsior bid on NYRA) who designs casinos for some of those very same out of state tribes. When asked about this conflict his press man stated that the tribes represented by the developer would be exempt from his wraith. He is a first class phony with an ego the size of Mt. Rushmore. Personally I have no confidence that the NY racing situation will be resolved any time soon with Spitzer most likely trying to get Excelsior the bid which will raise the ire of just about everybody including NYRA, Empire and associates the NY breeders and NY horseman.

You are clearly more informed on the NYRA and casino situation than I am.
I liked Elliot because he seemed to be trying to reform the upper 1% of American wealth. I cannot speak intelligently regarding his views on the NYRA situation.

I think he may have done a bit of good but his continued grandstanding makes you wonder how much really was accomplished and how much was fluff for the media. His insistence to prosecute the former clerks of scales at NYRA despite the case being rejected by the 1st grand Jury makes you think that he is after headlines rather than reform.

I can respect that opinion.
He may be grandstanding, I certainly am in no position to contradict you. I was just hopeful.

I actually met Spitzer in of all places the winners circle at Saratoga before he became the anti-christ of NY racing. Seemed to be enjoying himself. Maybe NYRA wasn't so corrupt when they gave him that finish line box?

Well, "day one" starts soon with his election. The turmoil that has gone on at NYRA the last three years has been in his part to gain this high seat. Looking under every rock, trying his darnest to come up with some kind of dirt to destroy NYRA - he has done! Now, as the governor of NY - he'll had even a more say in who will run thoroughbred racing in NY. God help us ! Belmont and Aqueduct may not be doing as well as the politicians want, but NYRA runs THREE tracks and we tinker with racing downstate - IT WILL BE TINKER WITH
at the Spa. You want Saratoga to be like Gulfstream? These guys will do it for the $$$. "Day One" - a year of more turmoil for NYRA!!!

Ummm... the guy's family is richer than the world. I don't know what his perogative is but it seems awfully conflicting.

I care a lot about this state because (a) I've lived here my whole life and (b) lived in every part of it from it's worst ghetto areas to it's ritziest areas of Manhattan so I know what's right and wrong with this place. Upstate NY gets screwed every way in funding and that's important to me that those areas get improvement, or we're going to be looking at an even more divided state.

As far as racing goes, NYRA is his worst enemy. He hates them almost as much as he hates the NYSE- this was the death knell for NYRA.

Jesus. This is not what I wanted to hear. I really appreciate hearing from someone who knows the situation firsthand. I am in Ky., and we OBVIOUSLY have our own problems. Out of ignorance, I ask this question, why does he hate NYRA exactly? I don't doubt you, just uninformed. Or, maybe you could direct me to a website?

I think there is a substantial confusion on this thread concerning Spitzer and any relationship he may currently have with NYRA.

Only thing that is not confusing is that Spitzer used his power as AG to find things wrong with NYRA. It's been a real pleasant three years hasn't it...the future of the best racing in the nation...with the present in turmoil and future
in limbo. No confusion here that it's only gonna get worst! When politicians are involved...NOTHING ever goes smooth.

I'm not sure. I always saw his motives as a political ploy (successful.) If you google "Spitzer" and "NYRA" you'll come up with some of the attacks he's made.
Here's one from the state government website:

NYRA IS GONE. Excelsior will be running NY racing.

Let's see, a corrupt and incompetent group like NYRA or a group run by somebody connected to the NY Yankees organization. I wonder who would do a better job. LOL.

America yesterday showed us what happens to corrupt and incompetent people when they kicked them out of congress, now the next corrupt and incompetent group, NYRA, will be kicked out soon enough.

I laugh so hard at the NYRA supporters. You want to reward corruption and incompetence. When the US and NY government have to go after you and you have to file for bankruptcy, you are not supposed to be rewarded.

I highly doubt it will be any better when the "corrupt" NYRA is gone. Funny how you think the people kick corrupt pols out of office. I my state (NY) just re-elected a comptroller who is a CROOK!!! And by an LANDSLIDE! It's apparent that you have an "axe to grind" with NYRA. If you think it's that bad, DON'T PLAY THE GAME in NY!
