Gulf is not everyone's favorite place. You go on a weekday and it's great. You go on a big Saturday and you cannot (literally) sit down for less than a hundred bucks unless you go into the simulcast room which is I think $30 those days.

I'm all about Tampa. Been there for four cards and always enjoyed it. A big sleeper for late fall racing is Calder. 10 graded stakes in December and a lot of the big stables race there, especially after the grass season closes in NY.

A great day at Calder will be Dec 16th. Four graded stakes. Come on down.

Not $100 admission, But there are only 600 grandstand seats. On big Saturdays, those go for $75+. And it's virtually impossible to get those on a big day.

Don't get me wrong, I like the place, but on a big racing day, yah gahnah pay tahp dahlah.

I might be alone on this one, but I'm pretty amped for some of the winter racing. I'm done playing the nags for the rest of the calendar year, but I've always enjoyed FG, GP and TAM and hopefully they'll help next year be a more successful one.. '06 kicked my ass.

My favorite angle at Tampa...

The Jose Ferrer OFF angle.

Above the Wind. Ronald Allen trainer. Freaking horse has won the Pelican Stakes more times than I can remember. I pray this horse is still in training.

Hey STS, do you remember a horse at DRC called It's The Wind?
Used to win a lot wire to wire.
Above the Wind made me think of it.

AJ78,
Don't remember that one. My years going there were about 75-82. Bearden, Janowitz, Maxwell, VanBerg. I DO remember the Derby Bar very, very well. On the occasion of a big score, it'd be Mitch Housey's but more often than not, it was the Derby Bar.

haha, know both those places but did not freqent them often. I think that horse ran 8-10 years after your time.

I was a bowler so my perfect double header was to head out to that bowling alley across I96 (forgot the name) in the morning and roll for about an hour or so, then head over for the live races. Of course if everything went well after the last race it was a mad dash across town to get to Hazel for the buggies.
Ahh, it doesn't get any better than that.

I have to agree with all the TBD enthusiasm. It's a fun place to dive into and play. Quirky, but lots of value and decent turf racing.
