i don't like that this happened...not sure what they were thinking in doing this and having it filmed.
on the other hand, we have asked our men in uniform to perform actions that are truly unimaginable and have to witness some horrible things that will scar a person forever. you can't necessarily judge a soldiers actions based on how things are in 'the real world'. we ask inhuman things of them, and then expect them to never act inhumanely. tough task. when the first concentration camp was found by u.s. soldiers, some of the soldiers killed the nazi guards. they really lost it-the things they found and saw were horrifying. were they correct in what they did? no. can i say i would feel comfortably judging them harshly for it? not at all. 'war is cruelty. you cannot refine it.' sherman said that, and he's absolutely correct. |

it's a discipline problem at the small unit level. some lieutenant or captain will lose their combat command as they should. it doesn't happen in a well disciplined unit.
the regretable part is this makes it harder for every other u.s. soldier in afghanistan trying to do their job in a counter insurgency. it's idiotic to do it and 10x more idiotic to film it. |

My thought also, why film it..guess one of the guys decided to 'distribute' it.. Feel the same as you on condemnation....earlier i sent a clip to an old Marine bud for his take....think i know his answer.....
