It is kind of goofy thing, all of it.
The best ones are the guys who score TD's and must kneel in prayer and ignore their teammates desire to celebrate that which they helped the TD maker make ...and then ignore them again as the TD maker rushes to the stands to celebrate with his fans; thereby ensuring fan love so he can use that against management in demanding a new contract. Showing you love God and allowing fans to touchy-feel you is a great scam.
