I have two questions... the one I want to ask every week and never do and now something else.

I'm not understanding the TBD here. I mean I know what it stands for but why is it even there? What exactly is it that needs to be determined days after the race?

The question I always want to ask is this... obviously Mr. Beyer hasn't been around for the hundred and some odd years that drf has.

What did they use before Beyer? Was there just no such thing as speed figures (maybe I should know this but I don't. Did he come up with them or refine and improve them)?

on DRF the two numbers after the horses odds on the running line are a variety of speed figure and have been there for as long as I can remember

They are there now. They were there pre-Beyer
example 87-17

It can take 24-72 hours for Beyer Associates to make the figures. In this case; I just haven't had a chance to plug in the number.

The pre-Beyer old style figures in the Form are the Speed Rating/Track Variant.

Thanks guys. Still confused but maybe that's just me.

King tried to explain things like splitting the variant to me a couple of years ago and I just have such a problem understanding...

One of you should write an idiots guide to speed figs.

I think Steve usually posts these on Monday and the TBD'S are from the Sunday stakes in most cases and just haven't been published yet.

People who did their own figures before Beyer's were published had a big advantage. Before Beyer's I don't believe there were reliable speed figures in the DRF.

Do you know, off the top of your head, when they started (publishing them in drf)?

Thank you Sir... I'm doing too many things at once and figured I'd just be lazy and ask you.

Honestly though... someone needs to break it down for people like me who aren't special but who just have a very hard time understanding it for whatever reason.

That doesn't seem right. I believe they debuted in the Racing Times in 1991, and the form didn't get them until at least 1992.

in 1992 the Daily Racing Form began incorporating Beyer Speed Figures in a horse's past performances
