Alpha ran an odd race.

I liked how he was running at the end of the race, but the rest of his performance was kind of strange to me.

I suppose it was only his second start.

Seemed to bobble at the break, then pulled that typical A.P. Indy-like "I won't accelerate on the turn no matter how much urging the rider does" run into the stretch. Ground it out for a placing, but was no match at any point for Union Rags.

Looked very plodder-like, but given his awesome debut (and the likelihood that Union Rags is a Fly So Free-type), I'm not willing to write him off for next year's classics just yet. I hope he runs 5th or 6th in the BC Juvenile so he's a decent number in the future books.

I wouldn't quite label him plodder off that. It was just sort of a spotty run of sort. A bit eratic. Here is what the trainer said later on, btw....

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said Champagne runner-up Alpha came out of the race in good order and will be pointed to the Juvenile as well.

“He didn’t break real well, he kind of slipped a little bit behind, his head was going back and forth a lot before they kicked it,’’ McLaughlin said. “He broke poorly and took a lot of dirt. We’re happy he got up for second because the winner was the best and we were second best.’’
