I believe the limited off season has hurt the defenses most in the NFL. There were a lot of ridiculous offensive numbers put up in week 1.

As far as Cam Newton goes he benefited highly from teams not knowing anything about him or his new coach and their game plan. My guess is you will see a new Cam Newton in Week 2, especially if T. Williams plays. Even if Tramon doesn't play Newton will encounter something he has never seen before. My guess is he will throw 1 TD or less, 2 INT's, and get sacked 3 times minimum this weekend. I guess we will see....

Hey!

All she said is it was a record setting performance by a rookie.

He looked pretty good again. As a matter of fact, he looked like a seasoned vet at times.

Very impressive.

It's a league of perfection. 3 picks? It will be a pattern.

How about Rodgers?

One player can only do so much. His numbers have been incredible even though the three picks weren't good. The team is not that good. That's why they were in position to draft number one in the first place. Adrian Peterson is the best back in the league but they are 0-2 also. I think it's silly to use 0-2 as any kind of barometer of how well he's played. He's been great.

I think he had a 72.0 rating for this game.

He threw to the opposing players juuust a bit too much.

But he's a pretty loser.

my point is it doesn't matter if one player plays lights out. what matters is wins. you don't go to the post-season because your qb throws over 400 yards a game.
and 3 picks don't help.

Obviously the real deal. Cam Newton is first QB in history to throw for 400 yds in his 1st 2 games and only 6th QB to have back-to-back 400 yd games period.

There's no question that ultimately wins and losses are what matter most but the team success doesn't really reflect on his individual talent which was the point of this thread. Newton is shocking everyone and is playing great.

Obviously he has played well so far and is doing it with a less than stellar supporting cast. But let's put some things into perspective. He's throwing the ball a lot more than anyone thought he was going to be, because he HAS to.

Outside of the 53 yards Newton ran for today, he got a total of 18 rushing yards combined from DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

I don't think the guys talent was ever a question. He was the number 1 pick in the draft. What was questioned was whether he could transfer his college game to the next level. I think it's too early to decide if he can or not. It certainly looks like he should be able to have a long career if he continues to progress, but he still has a long way to go.

All true. A couple of things to note. He's now got the highest yardage game for a rookie in NFL history and two of the three highest. He's one of only seven quarterbacks in NFL history to throw for over 400 yards in consecutive weeks. Before today, there were five but then he and Brady both joined that list. To have done it in his first two games is incredible. When you mention the yards gained by Williams and Stewart combined, I think that actually makes his accomplishment a little more impressive. When the defense knows you are going to be dropping back to pass everytime, it's easier to defend. You are right that the talent wasn't a question. I think that even the most optomistic high end expectations would have been for 250 yards passing, 50 yards rushing, and a couple of touchdowns. Nobody could have expected he'd make it look easier against NFL defenses, the defending champion at that, than he did against the SEC. Now this doesn't mean that next week, he can't go 18-40 for 190 yards and three more picks. But for these first two weeks, he's far exceeded any expectations.

In all fairness, and i am NOT comparing the two as qb's, but Peyton went 3-13 as a starting rookie. The fact tht his team lost two gritty games shouldnt be held against him. If he limits his bonehead throws, im eager to see what becomes of his career, and i dont even particularly care for the kid.

Exactly. I think Aikman's record was bad too. It's very hard for quarterbacks drafted in the top five to come in and win games right away because their teams usually suck and that's why they were drafting that high in the first place.

Heah we go again.

Making heroes out of people doing nothing heroic.

This is beginning to sound like the LeBron James deal....already.

Newtons Flaw has shown he can be every bit as good as Vinny Testeverde ...and so far, that's about it.

He played better than I thought he would however Tramon Williams didn't play and that was a huge factor for the pack. He made a lot of rookie mistakes (3rd and goal especially). He was sacked 4 times threw 3 INT's, threw 1 TD and ran for 1 somewhat meaningless TD. Yardage is becoming a ridiculous fantasy stat in the NFL and is not a true reflection of how good someone actually played. I would take 250 yrds passing 3 TD's and 0 INT's over the game Newton had. With all that said Newton is playing much better than I would have thought at this stage in his rookie year. Credit has to be given to his O-line. He had a lot of time back there on Sunday
