Danzig and " laid back " in the same sentence?????? Methinks you were shown the wrong horse.
his eye wasn't missing, he injured it with a splinter, and it clouded over.

and his knee was probably bumpy due to injuries and arthritis. just like genuine risk, her knee is huge--she got loose at the track and ran into a fire hydrant--that was why she retired.

also, danzig wasn't laid back in his younger days. his paddock was not for the faint of heart. but of course age caught up with him, as well as all the aches and pains. i doubt he calmed down, just slowed down!

I thought it was missing....though whatever the case they weren't sure how he did it. He did it one night and they surmised he did it by rubbing against the fence.

I saw him a few times. The first time was 1994 and the last was 2003. He was somewhat mellowed by 2003 as they actually let me go to his stall. All the groom had to do was shake the bridle used for breeding, however, and he got all charged up.

i saw him last summer. groom said that when they got word a horse went down in feb(devil's bag), everyone automatically assumed it was danzig because of his leg. he said the old guy was moving ok, just slowed down. he lived a full life, certainly made his mark!

Yeah...he was a remarkable sire.

Along with Mr. P he was the one I always wanted to see the most when I went to Claiborne. Though, having seen so many of them race, it was fun to see them all. I only saw Easy Goer once, Forty Niner a couple times, and Lure once ( I got to feel where he had the ball on his tendon ).

I loved Easy Goer as much as pretty much any horse I ever saw. Not saying he was the best, though he was at least close, but I loved him.

I saw virtually every race he ran live. I was there for every start of his 2YO year, save his debut when he lost to Lorenzoni, I missed his Florida debut as a 3YO as well as the Derby and Preakness and then I think he debuted as a 4YO in Florida. Otherwise I saw them all.

Me too...

Was he a nice horse, though? How big was he, etc? I was obsessed with the horse when I was a kid. We never made it out to Claiborne when I was a kid, so I never saw him up close.

i think it was the best part of my vacation. so much racing history at that farm...lol still can't get over monarchos just standing there eating up all the attention. pulpit even behaved himself when the groom brought him out.
