Default Tigers vs Cards

Can't wait. Finally a rematch of a great World Series in 1968.

I was but a wee lad in '68, growing up a 10 minute bus ride from Tiger Stadium. Here's what I remember.

McLain... 31 game winner
Gibson ... 22 game winner with 13 (13!!) complete game shutoutsand an ERA of 1.1.

Tigers ... start CF Mickey Stanley at shortstop, getting more offense and bench weak-hit/great field SS Ray Oyler.

Game 1... Gibson strikes out 17.
Game 4... Gibson rolls again, CG struck out 10 or 11. SL leads Series 3-1.
Game 5... Lou Brock forgets to slide.... out at home, barely. SL now 3-2.
Game 6... After losing game 1 and after getting absolutely crushed in game 4 and not making it through the 3rd inning, McLain comes back on 2 DAYS REST, pitching a complete game. Series 3-3.
Game 7 ... In St. Louis, Lolich comes back on 2 DAYS rest and dominates, pitching a 5 (or 6) hit CG to win his 3rd start of the series. Tigers finally got to Gibson sfter two outs in the 7th. Tigers win!

Anything anywhere close to this will be good enough for me.

Tigers in 5 - regardless what Mike says. Detroit is the best team this year. I know! I know! A Wildcard team!

I was actually hoping the Mets will be there, so I can see Glavine pitch at Comamerica and NOT get that 6 inches to a foot off the plate strike call that he always seem to get. He's not good w/o it.

Just don't touch Wainwright when he's in there.

Those were the great days of baseball. This year's Tigers are a lot like the 1984 team...the Cards on the other hand are nothing like the Gibson years.
Tigers in 5, I'll give one game to LaRussa and the Red Birds

Game 1: Bob Seger will sing "America the Beautiful." Al Kaline and Willie Horton will throw out the first pitch.

Game 2: Anita Baker will sing the National Anthem

I'm rooting for the Cradinals to win just to say I told you so.
Since the advent of the misguided playoff system in the 90's, the best team rarely wins.
5th best team in their own league is 3 wins away from being world champs, lol. What a joke.

Last I checked you said the AL team would crush the NL team. Don't see how you can be saying I told you so to anything. I guess if you say enough though you will always be able to say I told you so about something.

Who ever said anything about the best team winning the World Series?

It's 4 of 7 and that's just one game above .500 when it counts the most.

Let the best slightly above average team prevail.

GO CARDS !!!

How do you figure fifth best team? Only the Yanks and Twins had more wins in the AL, only the Mets in the NL.

I am torn on this World Series. My nephew (who is 6) plays on a ballteam named the Cardinals and I like Carpenter as a pitcher (and since his team likes to not score any runs when he pitches AWESOME, I think he deserves it).

BUT ON THE OTHER HAND, Sean Casey helped coach my nephew's T-ball team last year after his season. My nephew now has a beautiful swing for a six year old. I am not being bias either. His coaches even say so. So Sean has a spot in my heart so I would like to see him win it.

So either way, I think I will be happy.

Then the Cardinals? Are you kidding me?
In the NL:
Mets 97 wins
Padres 88wins
Dodgers 88 wins
Phillies 85 wins
Cardinals 83 wins

They were 5th best in their own league.

In the AL there were EIGHT TEAMS with more wins than the Cards.
So the team that was 13th best in regular season play is now 3 wins away from the trophy.
You telling me there isn't anything wrong with that?

And yeah, I'm rooting for the Cards. I hate cheaters. USC got theirs last year when Vinnie hugged the mascot and Pete carroll had a nervous breakdown on tv.
I just can't bear the thought of Rogers getting a ring now.
I will be rooting for the redbirds tonight.

I dont think Carpenter is up to the challenge of the Tigers...he just hasn't been his best except for his last start. It's supposed to be another nite in high 30's-low 40's. Robertson will have to be on top of his pitches,as he hasn't pitched since 10/1. Big-O: I pm'ed you last week, send me something back, huh?

Well That was interesting! Carpenter lived up to his rep tonite! Tigers also imploded defensively to close the door. I'm puzzled, though, by the Carpenter thumb cramp. Never heard of it or experienced it. Other larger muscles sure....Now I'm informed that he bruised the thumb at bat. Anyway, the Tigers better bring extra to the park tomorrow nite cuz
Suppan is lights out in post season. ENJOY!
