A lot of times they only appeared to suck because the older male division was actually strong and deep.

Curlin, Street Sense, and Hard Spun wouldn't have looked very good to a lot of people if Ghostzapper, Mineshaft, Congaree, Medgalia D' Oro, Pleasantly Perfect, Roses In May etc are all going strong in the handicap division.

I think you are making my point for me.

The 2007 3yos were insanely overrated, in large part to what you say above.

As to those really good older horses you mention, those were all 3yos from nearly 10 years ago.

John Shireffs big 3yo this year - Mr. Commons isn't a bad 3 total starts horse. On dirt - he went 3/5ths faster than Evening Jewel's race last out. He's by Artie Schiller though - and looked great on turf.

3-year-old crops since 2000:

2010: pure dogsh!t

2009: A 3yo filly was open lengths superior to everything

2008: Big Brown and a bunch of dogsh!t

2007: Solid crop - not as talented at the top as '06, but much deeper.

2006: Bernardini, Discreet Cat, Barbaro - no depth though

2005: Afleet Alex, Bellamy Road - and a lot of junk

2004: solid crop - but the older males were friggen strong.

2003: Very solid crop - but the older males were friggen strong

2002: War Emblem, Medaglia D' Oro, Came Home - avg depth

2001: VERY strong wildly underrated crop going into the Kentucky Derby - injuries took a big toll. Almost everything got hurt before year end.

2000: Awesome crop. VERY talented and easily the deepest of all since.

Exactly my point(s).

This crop, potentially (since everyone is so lightly raced), has both significant talent and depth.

You really need to go back 11 years, to 2001, to find a really good group.

A lot of them will inevitably get hurt or won't live up to that potential.

There's a reason why everyone is so deathly affraid to run their horses and campaign them like they're true race horses.

Maybe I'm just in a piss poor mood today, but I'm not as excited as many of you seem to be. Especially considering no one seems to want to race each other. I just don't get as excited about flashy maiden wins like I used to.

Yeah, most of the crops recently have sucked but you could have picked 10 exciting maiden or allowance winners most of those years in March and speculated about what they could have been. They never end up being anything.

Maybe 3 or 4 tops - and they will almost always have sprint pedigrees like Eightyfiveinafifty - even Big Brown had a sprint pedigree.

Since Curlin's big Jan maiden win - how many promising 3yo's with two races or less and distance friendly pedigrees have we seen?

Every year Pletcher has a few big maiden or comeback allowance winners at Gulfstream like Dunkirk. Same goes for Baffert out west. I'm too lazy to go back and look but you know that's true.

i think it's a shame that it's march and horses haven't made their 3 yo debut. but they're supposed to be the top of the crop? based on what? works? a sad state of affairs.

If a list had been posted before last weekend's races, Travelin Man would have been near the top of everyone's lists. Just goes to show that you can't get too hyped over potential when it's all maidens and nw1x races.

I think it's all about Uncle Mo. Not a single other 3yo gets me excited in this crop. I too with Kantharos had been able to stick around.

Also, I think for 2007, you've got to include Rags to Riches as one of the top 3yos, considering how she ran stride for stride with Curlin and beat him in the Belmont.
