I hope BYU doesn't win another game the rest of the season so everybody at that school has an inner crisis trying to decide what's more important - a once-in-a-lifetime potential Final Four team or some stupid oppressive religious bullshit Boy Scout oath.

Oh, it's more important (to them) to punish a guy for getting some. This is important shyt, Joe.

Regardless of how silly we think the rules are, what was the university supposed to do in this case? Were they supposed to change the rule because they have a good basketball team?

The player knew the rules regardless of how silly we think they are. If he broke the rules, its his fault and he and the team have to live with it. Its not like this is some tiny, little known contract clause. This is something that everyone in the university knows before they enroll. That's why so many of them get married while they are still in school.

If the school allowed this one to slide and it got out down the road on deadspin the uproar would be massive and could cause irreparable damage. They really have no choice here.

Yes, and most anybody (with any common sense at all) will punish them by never voting for a Mormon. They aren't mainstream. So, stay the fk away from being in charge of mainstream people. Period. I give them credit for being arrogant enough to think they should have any job making decisions for mainstream people. They have beach balls. I give them that.

I think the fact they stood by their code and did what they did kind of refreshing nowadays. Don't get me wrong, I strongly disagree with their beliefs on sex, caffeine, etc. But they have rules and they stood by them. They could have done what 99.9% of schools would have done and just ignored it, but they protected their code of ethics.

Obviously this code is important to the students as well, because didn't the player admit to what he did? How else would anyone have found out about it?

BTW- I know BYU is a football school and as such there may be a little more leeway but I have hard time believing that Jim McMahon followed that script for 4 years

Heard McMahon on a radio show today. He said as soon his last game at BYU (the Holiday Bowl), he was asked to leave the school because of numerous honor code violations, they waited until he had no more eligibility left and then hammered him.

Ty Detmer also stated that they are more strict today than when he played.
