I didnt suggest they should not have helped the horse live. Consider all the ones that could have been saved without risk with those dollars spent for that one animal. Again there is no right or wrong answer.

I am going to save my horse, the horse I care about, rather than strangers horses, first. There is no way I'd euthanize my horse if I could save it, in favor of donating that money to charity for other horses I don't know.
