Turf was slow all day yesterday, but the first 1/8 of a mile or so of that race was almost surreal to watch -- check out the replay, NOBODY wants the lead, and it looks like they're just walking through the stretch. It was really weird.

That pace was Supersonic fast compared to the one set by Sulamani in the 2002 Prix Niel.

The three runners in the 1 1/2-mile Group 2 Niel set out at a snail's pace with Gulf News traveling the first seven furlongs in 2:11.20. Sulamani loped to the lead three furlongs from home, getting the last three-eighths of a mile in 33.70 seconds to complete the 12 furlongs in 3:12.80, a performance for which the 3-10 favorite and his rider, Thierry Thulliez, were greeted in the winner's circle by boos.
An opening 7 furlongs in 2:11.20 over a reasonably fast track is an impressive accomplish in such a major stakes race.
