You might agree with me that the risk of putting one on the track for two minutes where the purse doesn't even come close to what it would bring by breeding is a business decision. I'm not making excuses for them. I'm just attempting to understand what their motivation is.

It's their money and they can do with it as they choose ( as long as it's legal ) but I don't have to like what they do. I feel like they have a sort of " obligation " to us, the people that support racing and pay the bills, i.e. bettors, to give something back to us...and they don't. The only people they reward are the breeders, and without bettors the game would simply disappear, so their dream of winning the Derby certainly couldn't be realized, because if every better stopped tomorrow the racetracks would be shut down. There is a complete lack of acknowledgement of this by many people and none more so than Godolphin and their " do as we please " style.

Yes, they could run their horses against each other in Dubai, just as rich people could back to racing against each other on there farms, but somehow I am guessing the glory would be gone with no gamblers left to support the game as the world wide prestige and attention would disappear.

Far-fetched? Of course but I'm making a point. My point is there should be a symbiotic relationship with horse owners and racing fans and there simply isn't at least when it comes to Godolphin.

As far as the game taking " deep pockets ", no doubt, but the need for even deeper pockets has been caused very much by Godolphin. And just to be fair, I am no fan of Coolmore either, in fact I have even bigger problems with them which I simply can't get into. But, suffice to say, neither of these stables have made racing better for us racing fans in the grander scheme of things.

Just imagine if George Bush spent $56 million on horses at a sale.

I also agree that there needs to be a better relationship between owners and bettors. The bettors DO indeed grease the wheels of this sport. No debate there at all.
I can't wait for the day when one of my homebreds beats one of theirs by thirty lengths. Both stables you mentioned.
Sure makes it fun for me. Godolphin and Coolmore have their dreams...and so do I.

Money shouldn't mean that much to them that he has to be rushed off to stud now. I thought a guy who loved racing as much as Sheikh Mo would want to campaign him again at 4. I'm especially shocked that he made this decision before the BC has even been run. If he loses, I'd think he would want to run him again next year to attempt to accomplish that goal.
Its sad, but I guess between retirements and the gruel of the Tri Crown, our chances of seeing a deep older horse division in my lifetime are dim.

The rumors of his retirement are greatly exaggerated and unfounded, at this point.
