A lot more NY Breds in the past were bred like Fourstardave: by Compliance (winner of zero races and $1,599) out of Sex Appeal (unraced) rather than Friends Lake (by AP Indy out of a G1 winning mare) or Haynesfield (by Speightstown out of a stakes winning mare.) The chances of success at a Breeders Cup level were very, very low with that type of program. It would be like a Cozar out of a Mountaineer cripple suddenly rising up to win the BC Mile today.

![]() Labreds usually aren't much, but one had a very good chance in a couple of Distaffs a few years ago.

![]() Lady's Secret is hardly your typical Oklahoma bred.
As for the other one, that's still better bred than your normal Nybred until just 6-7 years ago. |

![]() If Franny Freud had not been hurt she'd have been a factor in the F/M Sprint and she's by NY sire Freud, who has Deciphering Dreams in the Juvie Turf. Rightly So (F/M Sprint) is also a NY bred as is Silver Timber who is a legit candidate in the Turf Sprint.

Mr. Right (c 1963) won the Suburban, Woodward, Santa Anita H and Dwyer, etc. (No grading in those days. People knew what the important races were, they didn't have to be told.) Gander (g 1996) also dates to more than 6-7 years ago. He could run with the big boys. |
