Wow, Gallant Bob's record is even more impressive on paper than I remember.
I recall most of his competitors - Christopher R, Amerrico, Mac Corkle, Due Diligence, Our Hero, Talc, and Pompini (Arg). Pompini (Arg), in fact, was one of my all-time favorite horses. An allowance sprinter that ran at Aqueduct and Belmont in the 1970's - he would typically start 20-25 lengths behind the field and then miraculously, he would "close from the clouds" in a 6 or 7 furlong race.
