Thank you for sharing Merlinsky I've mentioned before that I was on the track apron at the Gulfstream Park finish line the day Spectacular Bid won The Florida Derby. Despite the rider. I noted one of the YouTube comments on your walkover share mentioned they had always looked for a replay of that Florida Derby race. I have, too. I watched the race real time, but never a replay. I counted at least three, maybe four, times that the rider got Spectacular Bid stopped in that Florida Derby. Of course the rider was just a kid then. Spectacular Bid made them both winners, though. |

I was living in Miami at the time, and in those Miami "pre-South Beach" years there was lots much local hype for Spectacular Bid. Last edited by westcoastinvader : 09-23-2010 at 12:31 AM. |

Oh, and just so I can be cited for a 30+ year old redboard, I was in Miami when jockey Walter Guerra was riding with a bug.
I knew he was good, early on. So I bet him. And did more than OK as he became better known. Of course I didn't make much money in those days, so I didn't have big scores. Probably I looked like one of those "That 70's Show" characters as I approached the $10 windows in Miami..... |
