Overall ... I'd give a higher rating to a 3YO (Bernardini) who finishes second in his first race ... and then romps off in his next six starts ... including two against the best older horses available (soon to happen) ...

... than a 3YO (Seattle Slew) who wins his first six starts and then gets a drubbing in his seventh ... never having faced an older horse.

Wouldn't you?
Bernardini was off the board in his first start.

Steve Haskin has a little story regarding that first start that I don't think he's written.

In late summer/early fall or so last year, Albertrani told Haskin that he had a terrific 2 year old he was working with that he thought was going to be special..

So Haskin sees Songster win his debut like a good thing and gets ahold of Albertrani: "I saw that 2 year old you told me to watch for.. He looked great!"...

Tom says, "That's not him... The good one was fourth in his debut the other day..."

Haskin: "Oh..OK.."

And then he forgot about it... Until he saw Bernardini's 2nd start...
