Promising juvenile euthanized
For the second straight year, misfortune has struck a promising 2-year-old in the barn of trainer Greg De Gannes. Naval Attack, who would have been one of the favorites for Saturday's Vandal Stakes, was euthanized after breezing five furlongs here July 17. "He condylar-fractured in both front legs," said De Gannes, who trained Naval Attack for owner Andrew Fredericks. Naval Attack had finished a closing second making his first lifetime start in the 5 1/2-furlong Shady Well here July 3. "He was a bright star, shot down early." Last June, Olredlgetcha had registered a very impressive win in his first lifetime start, the five-furlong Victoria. "It looked like he had a bright future," said De Gannes. "He died five days later." Olredlgetcha had developed a hock infection following the Victoria and was euthanized after being sent to the veterinary clinic at the nearby University of Guelph. |

Contessa reported that his New York-bred sprinter Castaneda, who won the Fred “Cappy” Capossela Stakes in February, died from a case of laminitis. Castaneda had a chip taken out of a knee in June and less than two weeks later he foundered.
Castaneda, a son of Yonaguska, won 3 races from 8 starts and earned $101,550 and Giant Legacy, a promising unraced 2-year-old colt owned by Live Oak Plantation and trained by Seth Benzel, broke his right hind leg at the conclusion of a workout Saturday morning over the main track and had to be euthanized. Giant Legacy was a son of Giant’s Causeway out of the mare Pretty Proud, who is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Whywhywhy and the Grade 2 winner Spellbinder. Giant Legacy sold for $425,000 at the 2009 Keeneland September yearling auction. Giant Legacy had been working steadily since late April and Benzel said Saturday’s move was to have been his final breeze before making his first start. “There’s no way to describe it,” Benzel said. “You just got to press on.” |

I know.
![]() There was a piece with a video (of course i didn't watch it)... I mean I had to look for the same story elsewhere cause i just thought it was too horrible to include it. Poor baby. * * * His name was Reel Missile and he was 11 years old. He finished the race at Market Rasen but died immedialtely after. There really aren't any details. Looking at his record it's pretty sad... he raced in 2004 thru 2006, only once in 2007 (in June) and reappeared this year running 4 times (may, June, July and this - his last). The trainer, owner and jockey all share the same last name so I'm sorry for the loss of their family member. * * * Beach Bottom Bay, at Del Mar... http://www.nctimes.com/sports/equest...487c0d1c4.html Conato, at Del Mar... http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2...g-streak-with/ http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2...rkout-del-mar/ Gold Vendetta, at Saratoga... http://blog.timesunion.com/horseraci...nned-off/5151/ |

Stotsfold...
04 August 2010 A SAD DAY FOR THE YARD In the midst of a really good year for the stable, we were dealt a hammer blow this morning with the news that STOTSFOLD had died on the operating table during the night. Almost 3 weeks after his career-best effort in winning the Gala Stakes at Sandown he was found to be suffering with colic and following several days of intense treatment and observation, he seemed to be over it. Sadly the problem recurred late last night and he was immediately taken to the Newmarket Equine Hospital but they were unable to save him. The homebred 7-year-old will be greatly missed around the yard but the memories will definitely linger long. http://www.walterswinburn.co.uk/Home.aspx People here probably remember him best for his run in the Arlington Million last year (he was 3rd). Rest in peace, good boy. ![]() |
