Thank God horse races can be " great results " with more than one specific horse winning.

In addition, I'm glad to see Triple Crown winners remain great horses....or at least the ones in my lifetime.

i believe andy was happy to see nick zito win a classic race with birdstone. and of course mary lou whitney is one of the grand dames of racing. then there's the fact he didn't like smarty to begin with!

It recognized Birdstone, while also capturing the emotion of a stunned nation.

That's the first time I've read about a horse race and then recollected the John F. Kennedy assassination in Dallas, and the space shuttle Challenger explosion.

I think I'd toss Birdstone versus Smarty Jones in my stunned nation exotics of American History.

But, I do get the sentiment and accept the meaning. I saw the stunned look real time from others.

I didn't bet that race.

I'm a big believer that great races and great horses make for great race calls. if you guys look at all the calls listed so far, you dont see many on the list that arent premier horses or premier races. that being said, it takes greatness in racecalling to add something to a spectacular performance.

that being said, my top 5 favorite calls
1. Cesario 2004 American Oaks--VJS
2. Smary Jones/Birdstone--Tom Durkin
3. pyrite personal--matt hook cracking himself up in the stretch
4. some 35 to 1 shot at Arlington---"holy sh...." john dooley
5. Captain Condo--Gary Henson
6. far to many others to name

Speaking of Arlington, I loved the call of John Henry'a win in The Arlington Million.

In the mid 80's Tom Hammoud was calling races and he did a call of 3 horses battling for the win to the wire in a 3 horse photo and it was the best call I ever heard.

The horses names were "Who's it going to be, I Dont Know, and The Winner is".

I cant find the call on you tube , but I laughed all the way to the wire and Hammond called it perfect.

"Who's it going to be, I Dont Know, and The Winner is".

"Who's it going to be, I Dont Know, and The Winner is".

"The Winner is? .............."I Dont Know"!

There is also a Durkin call of a stretch duel between Woodmere and Wood Winner that is pretty entertaining....not up there with the big races, but fun none the less.

Of course! Some of my favorite days in the sport have been those days. I loved seeing Big Brown spinning his wheels and going nowhere, and Real Quiet failing to sustain the 7f drive his jock tried to push him through. Seeing a horse I feel is undeserving fail to win the TC, and seeing a smug trainer be all disappointed about it, and maybe winning some cash while I'm at it? You can't beat it!

I was, however, very disappointed in 2003. I was there that day, and I really liked Funny Cide and would have enjoyed seeing him win it.

I suspect the call where we hear "Morethan Fourhours....gets...up" on the 5/31 ATR is not gonna be ranked one of the best ever. Viagra commercial on the brain?

BloodHorse just put up this video of Tom Durkin reliving some of his calls of the failed Triple Crown bids in the Belmont. While not favorite calls, they were special calls of special races, and I enjoy Mr. Durkin's comments in hindsight.

One more, and not saying it was the best of all time, but I really liked Michael Wrona's
call of the last race ever run at Bay Meadows.

The race was aptly named "The Last Dance."

Wrona's unique call at the break is always "Racing!"

For the Bay Meadows all time finale his break call was "Dancing.."

He then wove commentary of it being the last race ever at the venue with the call of the race.

The call had been on calracing.com for some time, but apparently all the Bay Meadows races have been purged. I know "You Lift Me Up" was the winner of "The Last Dance." The search on her name shows races before the Bay Meadows finale victory available, but "The Last Dance" is apparently gone.

It was a really nice call.
