Can you break down your estimated $3600 per month into individual estimated costs, i.e., day rate, vet bill, van bill, etc.

Assume 10% purse commission to Chuck - would that be on all purses or only on top 3 purses?

Any management fees?

Any voting rights or is this a silent partnership?

If a horse is taken out of training for say 3 months what are the costs of keeping the horse on the farm compared to keeping her under training ?

Also I was wondering if the horse doesn't pan out as expected as a racehorse and has some value as a broodmare what are the costs of owning her for breeding.

Thank you.
Hey PCL, the $180 fixed cost is when your 'share' is in full training. If for some reason she needed a break, it would be less then $180 and the 5% equivalent would be approx $50. This number really depends on what is going on with the particular horse.

Broodmare value is dropped over the last couple years because of the economy, even so, we probably wouldn't keep them for breeding purposes. This is a racing agreement. I will say that because of the 'bottom side' of alot of these fillies, if they were to win some races, they would have some broodmare value.

Chuck is managing these horses. Partners have every right to voice their opinions and they will be noted, Chuck is obviously going to do what he thinks is best for the horse, but like always, he is going to customize to his owners. I think a perfect example is where he has raced alot of the DT horses, I think he has done pretty good running them where they belong, and at tracks available to the partners. The people currently involved are in it for the love of the game, and their main goal is to break even and have alot of fun.

Some months cost $3200, some months cost $4k. I pulled the $3600 average from 2 years of solid data.

Here would be an approx breakdown:
Day rate: $2400
Supplements: $150
Blacksmith: $150
Vet: $400
Transportation, Dental, Insurance, Jock Mount fees, Licensing, Pony to posts, Ponying, Stall rent: Variable

What is the set-up of the business entity? LLC? GP? Inc?

Will the business be insured?

Thanks for the breakdown of costs! Nicely done!!!

I've always got some partners that are interested in babies so I'll run it by them. We've got some cash lying around so it might be interesting to jump in on a couple shares.......

I have purchased shares in two of the fillies and am already impressed with the management by Scav and Chuck. Great communication and they have a Facebook page and blog, both are regularly updated. I have owned a low level claimer in California and found that it was a money suck. I wanted to still own a race horse but not put a ton of money into it - this seemed like an easy way to do it. If you want to own a piece of a race horse that may have potential and be involved with some knowledgeable guys, this is a good opportunity.

Does your home have windows currently?

Do you own a race horse?

Whichever you answered "no" to, that's the thing you need to buy

The horses will most likely be run under "Charles Simon, Paul Harte, and Paul Harte's Friend" but I will have to confirm that with Chuck. There is no reason for everyone to pay for licensing on a 5% share, when some states, like KY, are over $100 to get licensed.

We are not setting this up as an LLC or partnership, just a bunch of people jumping in on small shares on some nicely bred fillies

Sorry - without a proper business structure, my owners aren't interested. We are a business, we operate as a business, and without the right setup, we can't be involved.

Best of luck.........

Default Smarty Jones fillies

Smarty Jones runners win at a 18% rate and are quite versatile. They run on dirt, turf and that fake stuff.... The five fillies are all bred quite well and obviously are priced to sell. As Tom says, this is a great way to get involved and the package of five is a great way to diversify. Angry Dragon appears to be quite precocious and i believe went 3 furlongs this past week at AP. Slumber Party and Lady THief were both down in Ocala this winter along with AD before shipping to Arlington a few weeks ago. The other two Hemissesu and Red B should be shipped from the farm to AP in short order.

I don't appreciate your baseless inference that we don't have a "proper business structure". If you don't care to participate, then don't participate. We are looking to win a few races and have some fun. The fact that somehow we aren't enough of a "business" for you or your owners confirms to me that we will be far better off without you.

Well said Chuck.

If you need lawyers and multi-paged contracts to own a horse, you're probably not in it for the fun... and shouldn't this be fun? I'm not in this to own a money-maker, I'd like to get a winners circle photo and have a beer or two with Chuck and Scav.

Purse money is just an opportunity to buy more beer and hay.
