Hold up a second... It's a mistake to think that running 1.5 miles there is anything like running 1.5 miles here. The Epsom Derby is won in 2:32.0-2:36.0, or in other words, about 5 seconds slower than the Belmont. As nuts as McPeek may be, I wouldn't be so dismissive of this concept. It's horses galloping for a seven-eighths of a mile and finishing the last five-eighths with a flourish. It's not an American Classic dirt race.

Pace or none, 12 panels on the turf is a long way...Cuvee doesn't help.

Yeah. Here's a horse that hasn't sniffed a good trip in 4 straight races. And we have nothing better to do than trash him. Maybe he doesn't get 12F but put him BEHIND horses and make a ****in' timely move (for once) with him and he's certainly not embarrassing himself.

If Dubai Millenniumm had only ducked the Epsom Derby ... I think he would probably be considered the consensus best horse from last decade over Ghostzapper.

Mineshaft was a better horse and for a trainer that wasn't a cheat. How the great DrugS could not see this is beyond me.

I agree Doug -

Just to add as well that Epsom is the closest a horse will ever get to riding on a rollercoaster - it is just a ridiculous track and you can see every year how it affects plenty of immature horses.

It's a strong leader in the clubhoue though.

Maybe Pletcher has his eyes set on the Grand National with Discreetly Mine.

85/50 thinking BC Marathon. Plenty of turns to bolt on.

Here was Cuvee.

Just missed the CD track record for 4.5fs in his debut - and set a 20 3/5th opening quarter while dueling in his first start as a 3yo.

His Saratoga Special win in the slop was spectacular.

1/9 to not make it over the first jump.

Although what McPeek is trying to do is about as laughable as a US Trainer taking a US Steeplechase horse over for the Gold Cup...

It also is uphill for a half-mile after the start and for the last half-mile. Even as good a miler as Blushing Groom couldn't last for that uphill finish.

Why is McPeak talking about this now? Did they run the Arkansas Derby early without anyone knowing about it and Noble's Promise lost?

That's too bad if it ends up happening. I think he's a pretty nice horse who has shown good versatility surface-wise. There should be a lot of 7f-8.5f stakes races he could contend in this summer. His versatility could especially make him a perfect candidate to enter in turf races with a high probability of coming off the turf, because he has shown ability on multiple main-track surfaces, as well as his impressive turf maiden-breaker.
I agree with the majority that attempting to prep him for a 12f race, and then shipping him over there and trying to win the race would probably ruin what could otherwise be a very useful 3yo campaign.

Steve, You're out of your mind on this one. You are totally overthinking it.

The final times are slower because the course is extremely demanding and you run uphill for part of it.

They don't call the race "the supreme test of a thoroughbred" because it's easy for a horse by Cuvee out of a Clever Trick mare to see out the distance.

How do our best American turf horses do when we travel to Dubai for the turf marathons? Hell, the Euro's only ship in a few each year for the BC Turf and they always seem to kick our asses in that race on our own soil.
