With $180K in earnings currently being 19th on this list and horses below the Top 20 (Eskendereya, Super Saver) surely to get more earnings:

(1) I wonder if the connections of Odysseus are rethinking about having the horse's next prep on synthetic.

(2) The winner of the Lexington Stakes may need some previous graded earnings just to make the field.

This was a question of mine shortly after hearing their plans.

That said- he is currently tied for 13th amongst horses headed to the Derby, so therefore 7 horses have to pass him and there are only 7 possible slots that earn enough to jump over him on a standalone basis (1st in the remaining 6 preps + 2nd in the Ark Derby) so a lot of things would have to happen for him to be excluded.

Steve's current list has Odysseus tied for 17th (not 13th).

Correct, however 3 of those are definitely not going (note-"amongst the horses headed to the Derby"). I should have said tied for 14th.

I thought they sounded hopeful. Like the LA Derby was a foundation building effort for the KY Derby.

Phil

Doesn't it seem a bit late for a last prep 2 weeks before the derby. Isn't the more likely scenario that the connections just have this date in their pocket in case everything falls against them and they wind up needing to finish 3rd or 4th in the Lex. to make the derby field. After that last effort I gotta believe Odys. needs all the recovery time he can get.

Considering the fields they've had for the Lexington the last few years, I think most trainers agree with you (I do too, the only really good horse to win the last few years was Showing Up and that was pre-poly and only his 3rd start). They're pointing to the Blue Grass though- which is 3 weeks out.
