The winner actually opened up pretty short in his debut at Saratoga if I remember correctly. . . The race was so loaded, though, that his odds had to go high when the pools filled out. |

I'll take my chances that Avenging Spirit is a good horse and he showed why he was heavily bet. Wow, a first time starter, who was studdish in the paddock and acted up, tired badly from chasing a speed horse that ran a monsterous race. That's never happened before.

I don't disagree. He should improve a whole lot. Certainly could be a good horse.
The mother was a nice closing turf stayer .. and Tapit's often seem to move plenty forward off of their debut. Tapit's debuters are a combined 5-for-86, his best ones like Carless Jewel and Stardom Bound both got beat on debut. Even without getting into circumstances - it's impressive that Avenging Spirt was good enough to run a Beyer in the low 60's on debut. I'd have been a lot more excited if he was 30/1 instead of 3/1. |

Speaking of Avenging Spirit, where has King Glorious been lately?

Just read for 8550 that he's going the Whirlaway - Gotham - Wood - Derby route.

IIRC correctly, she too, ran a good 3rd under difficult circumstances in her debut at Del Mar in the summer of '94. Came back to absolutely crush next time out by double digits rolling on the lead. Proved to be just a one-dimensional speedball, folding like a cheap suit in a few stakes attempts. Did win a first condition a year later in 1:08+ but had things her own way. |
