I'm not sure what you mean... Putting the money up = the sponsorship which = adding the 'product' or 'brand' to the race. LaPenta is promoting The Cliff's Edge ($5k fee at Marguax) and associating him as a racehorse/stallion with the final Derby prep. And boosting the purse to make it a great last chance try to get into the Derby is an added increase to the profile of an already historic race.

Rand... As I write, I think I'm understanding the differentiation you wanted to make: The product or brand being a horse who otherwise isn't qualified to have his name as a stake is tied in here... That makes sense... But as I tried to hint earlier, it's not that the sponsorship turned the "G3 Derby Trial" into the "G3 The Cliff's Edge"... If that was the original concern, it was a logical concern...

i didn't find it a big deal at all. it's much like any other sponsored race, as was said above...just instead of promoting a farm in total, it's one stallion in particular. an owner is putting money back into the sport to promote a horse. i'd rather have this then reading 'presented by yum brands' every time the derby is mentioned.

Exactly. That's what I meant.

I guess if we can live through the Kentucky Derby "sponsored by Yum Brands!" we can survive anything. Kudos to sponsoring the race.

Based upon the Derby Trial fields over the last few years, The Cliffs Edge 's association certainly not dragging the race down.

If someone didn't know any better, they would think the race was a trial for the Cliff's Edge Derby.
